UK duty and bath-panel classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3922 covers plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks, washbasins, bidets, lavatory pans, seats, covers, flushing cisterns and similar sanitary ware. For the wider product family, see acrylic baths, shower trays and toilet seats. This guide concerns the plastic panels enclosing the exposed sides and ends of a bath.

The supplied tariff lines all carry 6% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. The panel variants in the table repeat the supplied “Other” line, 3922 90 00 00, as a classification candidate. Confirm its suitability for the actual material, construction and presentation before ordering.

Give your customs broker the material declaration, photographs, installation drawing and details of whether panels arrive separately or with a bath. Use finding your commodity code to prepare the classification enquiry. The absence of an attached tariff control does not establish compliance for sale.

Panel profile, material and safe installation

Specify the plastic material and any backing, sheet thickness after forming, finished length and height, return edges, curvature, colour and gloss. Identify the bath model and handed profile where relevant. Agree the permitted trimming area, adjustable plinth arrangement, support points and supplied clips or brackets. Approve a sample fitted to the intended bath before accepting the production drawing.

Before placing imported products on the market, you must be able to demonstrate compliance with relevant regulations and safety requirements. For bath panels, assess sharp trimmed edges, cracking and insecure fixings. Agree installation and removal instructions, including access to concealed plumbing. For consumer products supplied in Great Britain, provide producer name and address and a product or batch reference on the product or packaging where reasonable.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 300 plastic front bath panels, assuming classification is confirmed under 3922 90 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,500. Duty at 6% is £450. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,950, so it is £1,590. Import taxes total £2,040; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £450 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure the finished profile against the approved drawing, including returns and plinth overlap; trial-fit front and end panels together beneath the intended bath rim.

Rigidity and fixings: check thickness at formed corners, bowing, cracking around fixing points and clip engagement; remove and refit the panel to check access without damaging it.

Finish: compare colour and gloss with the approved bath sample; inspect under raking light for scratches, pits, ripples and stress whitening.

Arrival and traceability: inspect carton crushing, corner damage, protective film and rubbing between nested panels; match product references, batch identification and producer details to the order. Set these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A panel can match the advertised bath length yet miss the rim profile, finished floor height or corner joint. Thin formed corners crack during trimming, bowed panels leave visible gaps, and weak clips release when the panel is pressed. Resolve these points through an assembled sample and a drawing that records the fitting surfaces.

Colour differences become obvious beside a white bath, while loose nested packing lets panels rub through their finish. Agree the colour reference, protective film, separators and corner protection. Inspect the shipment on arrival before distributing it, retaining photographs and batch details for any defects.
