Specify drainage, tap layout and supports

Specify the plastic type, wall thickness, reinforcement, overall dimensions and usable washing length. Agree tap positions, splashback, waste location, overflow arrangement and the fall towards the outlet. State whether brackets, legs, waste fittings and taps are included. Match the support drawing to the intended wall or floor construction, and approve a sample with the actual waste fitting installed.

Fittings on the water supply must meet applicable water fittings rules. In England and Wales, the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations set the requirements for water fittings. For a trough supplied as a construction product in Great Britain, establish the applicable conformity route before ordering. Legitimately CE-marked construction products can continue to be supplied to that market.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 plastic communal wash troughs, illustrative order under 3922 10 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,500. Duty at 6% is £450. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,950, so it is £1,590. Inspection checklist

Body and finish: compare the material and reinforcement with the approved sample; inspect rims, corners and waste openings for cracks, thin areas, sharp edges and scratches.

Drainage and leaks: install the agreed waste fitting, run water along the trough and check for pooling, leaking joints and splash escaping beyond the agreed washing area.

Supports and fit: measure mounting points, tap holes and outlet positions against the drawing; assemble brackets or legs and check movement under the agreed test load.

Arrival and packing: inspect ends and mounting flanges for transport damage, count supplied fittings and retain photographs before installation. Use the same acceptance checks in your inspection brief.

What goes wrong

Long moulded bodies can bow between supports, leaving water trapped away from the outlet. Waste flanges may distort when tightened, while tap holes can clash with brackets or leave insufficient access for fixing nuts. A sample checked without its intended supports and waste assembly can conceal these problems.

Cleaning products can dull or damage an unsuitable surface, and nested troughs can rub against each other during transport. Agree the cleaning instructions and protective packing with the factory, test the proposed cleaner on a sample and inspect the delivered troughs before fixing them in place.
