Sourcing PMSMs from China
Permanent-magnet synchronous motors from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected lines, with no anti-dumping duty. Confirm with the relevant product safety authority which conformity documentation and CE or UKCA marking requirements apply to the exact motor for sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources permanent-magnet synchronous motors.

Duty on permanent-magnet synchronous motors
Heading 8501 covers electric motors and generators, excluding generating sets. This guide covers permanent-magnet synchronous motors. The table includes narrowly specified appliance, automotive and traction motors, plus a general multi-phase motor line that may fit other models.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. These lines had no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, separate suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.
Check output power, construction and intended use against the complete tariff description. A permanent-magnet label alone does not establish eligibility for a specialised line. Confirm the commodity code using the datasheet and drawings. For the wider heading, see brushless DC motors.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Specified permanent-magnet synchronous motor, 550 W | 8501 51 00 25 | 0% | None |
| Specified permanent-magnet synchronous appliance motor, 500 W to 700 W | 8501 51 00 50 | 0% | None |
| Specified automotive permanent-magnet synchronous motor | 8501 52 20 70 | 0% | None |
| Other multi-phase motors, over 750 W up to 7.5 kW | 8501 52 20 89 | 0% | None |
| Specified liquid-cooled permanent-magnet synchronous traction motor | 8501 53 50 30 | 0% | None |
Specify the motor and its drive together
Specify continuous and peak torque, speed range, winding voltage, current, duty cycle, cooling, magnet material and permissible temperature rise. Agree shaft and flange drawings, connector pin assignments, feedback type and brake arrangements. Give the factory the intended drive details and require a sample test with that drive, recording starting, loaded running and temperature.
Confirm with the relevant authority whether motor ecodesign rules apply to the exact permanent-magnet design and intended use. Avoid transferring an induction-motor efficiency class to a permanent-magnet design without checking its meaning and test basis. Ask for measured efficiency across your operating range.
Confirm with the relevant product safety authority whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 apply to the exact motor and supply arrangement, including the applicable voltage scope and any exclusions. Ask which technical documentation, declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification are needed. For equipment within scope, importers must ensure accompanying instructions are in easily understandable English. Arrange testing and certification around the exact motor and supply arrangement.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative shipment of 400 permanent-magnet synchronous motors rated at 4 kW under 8501 52 20 89, invoiced at £48,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £50,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £50,500, so it is £10,100. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity and fit: compare nameplate data, shaft dimensions, flange holes and connector positions with the approved drawings; check arrival damage and corrosion.
Windings and insulation: compare winding resistance between phases and against the approved sample; record insulation tests using the agreed method.
Drive and feedback: run sampled motors with the agreed drive; check rotation, feedback direction, starting, torque delivery and brake operation where fitted.
Heat and mechanics: record loaded temperature, current, vibration and bearing noise; inspect cooling connections and seals. Use an agreed inspection plan.

What goes wrong
A motor can fit mechanically yet fail to work with the buyer's drive. Different winding characteristics, feedback wiring or rotor-position settings can cause poor starting, unstable running or excess current. Require the approved motor, drive settings and test record to remain linked through production.
Changes to magnets, windings or bearings can alter heat, noise and torque. Agree written approval before substitutions and compare production samples with the approved sample. Protect shafts, connectors and cooling fittings during shipment, then repeat the agreed functional checks on arrival.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on permanent-magnet synchronous motors from China?
The selected heading 8501 lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the exact line for your motor. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Can I use the same drive for different permanent-magnet motors?
Check winding characteristics, feedback type, connector wiring and drive settings. Test the proposed motor with your actual drive before approving production.
Do permanent-magnet motors need CE or UKCA marking?
Confirm with the relevant product safety authority whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations apply and which CE or UKCA marking and conformity documentation are needed for the Great Britain market. Check the supply arrangement and exact product.
What should I ask a Chinese motor factory to test?
Ask for loaded torque and speed, current, temperature rise, winding resistance, insulation, vibration and feedback operation against agreed acceptance criteria, using the intended drive.
