Optical monoculars: 4% UK duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 9005 covers monoculars alongside binoculars, other optical telescopes and astronomical instruments, and their mountings. Ordinary optical monoculars fall under 9005 80 00 00; relevant parts and mountings fall under 9005 90 00 00. The table shows product variants sharing these tariff lines. See the wider binoculars and telescopes guide.

The supplied snapshot records 4% duty for goods from China on both relevant lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions. It also attaches a DCMS Export Licence entry. Official guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirement; ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached entry applies to your shipment.

Confirm the commodity code from the actual construction and intended use. Rifle scopes and telescopic sights for arms belong under 9013, while digital cameras with zoom lenses belong under 8525. This guide concerns optical viewing instruments. Use the import duty and VAT guide when preparing your landed-cost calculation.

Magnification, focus and sealing

Specify magnification, objective diameter, prism glass, lens coatings, field of view, eye relief and closest focusing distance. Agree whether the eyecup must accommodate spectacle wearers. For zoom models, assess image sharpness and focus throughout the adjustment range, rather than accepting the maximum magnification printed on the box.

Keep an approved sample and record the focus mechanism, body covering, lens caps, strap attachment and supplied mountings. Define the test conditions for any waterproof claim and agree a temperature-cycle check for internal fogging. Request evidence for coating and gas-purging claims that cannot be confirmed by handling the sample.

General product safety law applies to ordinary consumer monoculars sold in Great Britain. Never view the sun through a monocular without a suitable solar filter. Agree clear safety instructions before approving packaging, particularly if the supplier offers solar-viewing accessories.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 optical monoculars; FOB value and freight including insurance are illustrative. under 9005 80 00 00, invoiced at £50,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £52,500. Duty at 4% is £2,100. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £54,600, so it is £10,920. Import taxes total £13,020; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,100 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Optics: compare samples with the approved unit against distant and close targets; check sharpness, distortion, field of view and visible internal dust.

Focus and handling: check smooth adjustment, focus retention, eyecup movement and usability with spectacles; inspect strap anchors and mounting fit.

Sealing: inspect seals and run the agreed water and temperature-cycle tests; check for moisture ingress and internal fogging.

Arrival condition: check cartons, lens surfaces, caps, instructions and supplied accessories; separate damaged units before accepting stock. Plan the checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A monocular can look acceptable in its case yet show a soft image, a narrow usable viewing area or poor close focus. Loose focus mechanisms can drift during use. Coating descriptions may exceed the supplied finish, and waterproof claims can fail at seals or moving joints.

Inspect production samples against the approved sample before shipment, then repeat handling and optical checks on arrival. Record defects by batch and agree corrective action with the supplier. Avoid treating a sharp central image as proof that edge quality, sealing and packaging also meet the specification.
