4% duty on telescope mounts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, astronomical telescope mounts fall within heading 9005, under 9005 90 00 00 for parts and accessories including mountings. The mounting types in the table share this commodity line. See the binoculars and telescopes guide for the wider heading.

The supplied tariff record shows 4% duty on goods from China, no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension. It attaches a cultural-goods export licence control. Official guidance says cultural goods have no import licensing requirement in Great Britain. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached control applies to your shipment, especially for older equipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete supplied configuration, including the mount, tripod, controller and accessories. Do not assume separately supplied components have the same classification.

Payload, saddle fit and tracking

Specify equatorial or altitude-azimuth movement, manual or motorised operation, the intended telescope and accessories, and the supplied tripod or pier connection. Agree payload testing with the actual equipment configuration. State saddle dimensions, clamp engagement, counterweight arrangement and adjustment travel rather than accepting a general compatibility claim.

For motorised mounts, agree tracking and pointing tests, controller functions, power connection and cable routing. Request model-specific documentation and arrange a separate compliance review for the electrical configuration through testing and certification.

Consumer mounts must be safe before being placed on the Great Britain market. Include checks for tipping, slipping clamps and trapped fingers in the acceptance brief.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 50 manual telescope mounts, illustrative order under 9005 90 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 4% is £436. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,336, so it is £2,267.20. Import taxes total £2,703.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £436 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: assemble the telescope connection and tripod interface using the supplied hardware; check engagement, clearance and secure clamping.

Stability: load the agreed telescope configuration, check balance and leg locks, and observe vibration after adjustment.

Movement: check smooth travel, backlash and locking; for motorised models, run the agreed tracking and pointing tests.

Arrival condition: check bent shafts, damaged threads, loose fasteners, missing counterweights and packaging damage. Use the agreed quality inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A quoted payload can disguise a mount that holds the telescope but vibrates during focusing. Saddle mismatch, weak tripod locks and poor balance can make an otherwise usable head unsuitable for the buyer's equipment. Test the complete assembly rather than the head alone.

Backlash causes delayed movement when reversing direction, while tracking drift spoils observation or imaging. Controllers and cables can also differ from the approved sample. Record the accepted configuration and reject substitutions unless their fit and performance have been checked.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on telescope mounts from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 4% for 9005 90 00 00, covering parts and accessories including mountings, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension.

How do I check a telescope mount's payload claim?

Test it with the intended telescope, accessories and balance arrangement. Check clamp security, vibration and movement under that configuration.

Will the mount fit my telescope?

Compare saddle dimensions, clamp engagement and clearance with your telescope's mounting plate. Assemble a sample before approving production.

What should I test on a motorised mount?

Agree tracking, pointing, backlash, controller and cable checks. Obtain documentation for the supplied electrical configuration and arrange its compliance review before ordering.
