Sourcing telescope focusers from China

Telescope focusers classified as parts under heading 9005 carry a flat 4% UK duty from China, with no trade remedy or suspension shown in the supplied tariff snapshot. Consumer focusers sold in Great Britain must be safe. Specify mounting fit, drawtube travel and holding performance with the intended camera or eyepiece. Duty on telescope focusers

Heading 9005 covers optical telescopes, astronomical instruments, their mountings and parts. This guide covers manual telescope focusers as parts and accessories under 9005 90 00 00. The table shows product variants sharing that tariff line. For the wider heading, see astronomical telescope mounts.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the supplied snapshot shows 4% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension listed. It also attaches a DCMS Export Licence control. Official cultural-goods guidance concerns exports from Great Britain to destinations outside the UK; ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached control applies to your transaction.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual assembly, its intended telescope and the supplied accessories. Do not assume a separate motor or controller shares the manual focuser's classification. The order values in the worked example are illustrative, not a quotation.

Mounting fit, travel and load retention

Choose rack-and-pinion, Crayford or helical operation. Specify the mounting flange, fixing pattern, thread diameter and pitch, drawtube bore, usable travel and fully retracted height. Agree drawings for adapters and extension tubes. Check that the intended eyepiece or camera reaches focus without the drawtube obstructing the optical path.

Agree a holding test with the intended camera, filter wheel or eyepiece at the least favourable telescope angle. Specify allowable play, focus shift when locking, and repeatability when reversing direction. General product safety requires consumer focusers supplied in Great Britain to be safe; include checks for sharp edges, pinch points and accessory retention.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small retailer's batch of manual rack-and-pinion telescope focusers under 9005 90 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 4% is £436. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,336, so it is £2,267.20. Import taxes total £2,703.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £436 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: trial-fit the mounting flange, adapters and accessories to the agreed mating parts; check threads without forcing them.

Motion: run the drawtube through its usable travel; check rough spots, sideways play, reversal backlash and lock-induced movement.

Holding: fit the agreed load, change the telescope angle and check for drawtube creep or slipping accessories.

Arrival: inspect the drawtube and flange for transit damage, check fasteners and supplied adapters, and repeat the fit and holding checks before releasing stock.

What goes wrong

A matching nominal diameter can hide a different thread pitch or flange pattern. Excessive retracted height can prevent a camera reaching focus. Drawtube tilt can move the image as focus changes, while an overtightened lock can shift focus or mark the tube.

A focuser that feels smooth without a load may slip when carrying a camera. Agree the test arrangement and acceptance criteria against an approved sample, then use quality inspection to check production units against them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on telescope focusers from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot shows 4% for parts and accessories under 9005 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension listed.

Which measurements should I send a focuser factory?

Send the flange drawing, fixing pattern, mating thread diameter and pitch, drawtube bore, usable travel, retracted height and details of the intended camera or eyepiece.

How do I check whether a focuser holds a camera?

Fit the intended camera and accessories, position the telescope at the least favourable angle, and check for creep. Repeat after reversing focus direction and applying the lock.

Can I buy a motorised version to the same specification?

Keep the mechanical fit checks, but specify the motor, controller, power supply and connection method separately. Confirm classification and applicable product rules for the complete supplied assembly.
