Sourcing astronomical finder scopes from China

Astronomical finder scopes and their mountings from China carry 4% UK duty across the relevant lines, with no listed trade remedies. Finder scopes sold for consumer use in Great Britain must be safe; agree optical alignment, bracket fit and solar warnings before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources astronomical finder scopes.

4% duty on optical finder scopes and mountings

Heading 9005 covers optical telescopes, astronomical instruments and their mountings and parts, excluding radio-astronomy instruments. This guide concerns optical astronomical finder scopes. Complete instruments are candidates for 9005 80 00 00; separately supplied brackets and mounting shoes are candidates for 9005 90 00 00. The table distinguishes buying configurations that share codes. See the wider binoculars and telescopes guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the relevant lines carry 4% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. It attaches a control labelled DCMS Export Licence. Official guidance says cultural-object imports into Great Britain have no licensing requirements. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached measure is treated for your import from China.

Confirm the commodity code using the optical design, intended use and whether the shipment contains complete scopes or separate mountings. Do not assume that electronic aiming devices or camera-based guiding equipment use the same code. The illustrative order values are not a quotation; use the import duty and VAT guide when preparing landed costs.

Optical alignment and telescope fit

Specify straight-through or right-angle viewing, image orientation, magnification, objective diameter, usable field of view, focus adjustment and crosshair design. Agree whether the eyepiece is fixed or removable. Supply drawings for the mounting shoe, bracket, tube clearance and adjustment screws, then approve a sample fitted to the intended telescope.

For finder scopes intended for consumer use in Great Britain, general product safety law applies and only safe products may be supplied. Agree instructions and solar warnings: looking at the sun through an unfiltered optical instrument can cause permanent eye damage. This guide concerns unpowered optical finders; identify any illuminated reticle or laser feature separately before assessing the product.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 50 optical astronomical finder scopes; quantity, FOB value and freight are illustrative under 9005 80 00 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,400. Duty at 4% is £136. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,536, so it is £707.20. Import taxes total £843.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £136 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Optics: check focus on a distant target, crosshair visibility, image orientation, field of view, lens cleanliness and internal fogging against the approved sample.

Alignment: centre the same distant target in the telescope and finder, operate the adjustment screws, then check whether alignment holds after removing and refitting the finder.

Mounting: check shoe dimensions, bracket clearance, screw engagement, tube retention and accessible adjustment. Look for loose fittings, sharp edges and finish damage.

Packing and instructions: check lens caps, protection around the bracket and eyepiece, the agreed product identification and solar warnings. Repeat the functional checks on arrival; agree the scope of quality inspection before shipment.

What goes wrong

A finder can focus clearly yet fail to align with the main telescope because the bracket runs out of adjustment. A shoe described as universal may not fit the buyer's telescope, while loose screws or a flexible bracket let the crosshair drift after handling. Approve the complete mounted assembly rather than the optical tube alone.

Right-angle models can have an image orientation different from the buyer's expectation. Crosshairs may be difficult to see against the night sky, and packing pressure can damage the eyepiece or move the bracket. Record the accepted image orientation and alignment checks in the order, and compare arrival samples with the approved assembly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on astronomical finder scopes from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 4% duty for optical finder scopes and their mountings, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Which commodity code covers an optical finder scope?

9005 80 00 00 is the candidate for a complete optical finder scope; 9005 90 00 00 covers parts and accessories including mountings. Confirm the exact configuration with your customs broker.

Will a finder scope bracket fit any telescope?

Do not rely on a universal-fit description. Match the mounting shoe and bracket drawings to the intended telescope and test the complete assembly for fit and alignment.

Can an astronomical finder scope be used to look at the sun?

Never look at the sun through an unfiltered finder scope. Unfiltered optical viewing can cause permanent eye damage; agree clear solar warnings with the supplier.
