6% duty on ordinary nylon welding rods

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3916 covers plastic rods, sticks and profile shapes, whether or not surface-worked but not otherwise worked, and monofilament with any cross-sectional dimension exceeding 1 mm. Ordinary solid nylon welding rods fall within the other condensation-polymer line, 3916 90 10 90. The table shows product variants sharing that code.

The supplied snapshot records 6% duty on this line for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure, suspension or attached import control. A separate line, 3916 90 10 10, has a zero-duty suspension for a specifically described cellular rod formulation. Do not apply that suspension to ordinary solid nylon welding rods.

Confirm the composition and physical form with your customs broker using our commodity-code guide. For another welding-rod family within this heading, see polypropylene welding rods.

Specify the nylon grade and trial weld

Specify the exact polyamide grade of both rod and parent material, rather than accepting a description of nylon alone. Agree whether fillers, recycled material or colourants are permitted. State the cross-sectional shape, dimensions, tolerance, straight lengths or coils, surface finish and batch identification.

Ask for drying and storage instructions, moisture-resistant packaging and processing guidance for the actual grade. Approve a trial weld on your own parent material and agree an acceptance test for joint strength and visible porosity before ordering.

UK REACH applies to substances on their own, in mixtures and in articles. Its restrictions can limit, ban or impose conditions on placing substances on the market or using them. Obtain formulation information and assess applicable restrictions for the rod and its intended use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 metres of solid nylon welding rod under 3916 90 10 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,500. Duty at 6% is £570. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,070, so it is £2,014. Import taxes total £2,584; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £570 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match the batch certificate and packaging identification to the approved polyamide grade, colour and agreed filler content.

Dimensions: measure the cross-section against the agreed tolerance and check straightness, coil feeding and surface contamination.

Moisture protection: inspect seals and moisture-resistant wrapping on arrival; follow the supplier's agreed conditioning instructions before weld testing.

Weld trial: use production samples on the intended parent material and check fusion, porosity and joint performance against the approved trial. Include these checks in your inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A matching colour can hide a different nylon grade or changed filler content. The rod may soften during welding yet fail to form the joint achieved with the approved sample. Moisture can produce bubbles, while dimensional variation can interrupt feeding through the welding equipment.

Keep an approved sample and batch records. Repeat the trial when the formulation changes, and agree how damaged packaging or failed weld samples will be handled before releasing the shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on nylon welding rods from China?

Ordinary solid nylon welding rods under 3916 90 10 90 carry 6% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot. No anti-dumping or countervailing measure is recorded on that line.

Can nylon welding rods qualify for zero duty?

Ordinary solid rods have no suspension in the snapshot. The suspended cellular-rod line has a specific formulation description; a nylon label alone does not establish eligibility.

How do I choose the right nylon welding rod?

Match the exact polyamide grade to the parent material, agree permitted fillers and colourants, and approve a trial weld using your own material and equipment.

What should I check before selling nylon welding rods in Great Britain?

Check formulation information against applicable UK REACH restrictions. Restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on placing substances on the market or using them.
