Sourcing polypropylene welding rods from China

Polypropylene welding rods from China normally fall under 3916 90 50 90 and carry a flat 6% UK duty. Check the exact formulation against applicable UK REACH restrictions before sale in Great Britain, and approve a weld trial with the intended sheet. A flat 6% duty on polypropylene welding rods

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3916 covers plastic rods, sticks and profile shapes, whether or not surface-worked but not otherwise worked, and monofilament whose cross-sectional dimension exceeds 1 mm. Polypropylene welding rods are normally considered under the addition-polymer line 3916 90 50 90.

That line carries 6% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control for this line. Suspensions recorded for other products within the heading do not cover ordinary polypropylene welding rods. The table shows product variants sharing the same commodity line.

Confirm the commodity code using the composition, cross-section and extent of processing. For other materials within the heading, see PVC profiles and plastic rods.

Match the welding rod to the sheet

Specify polypropylene homopolymer or copolymer, the intended sheet grade, colour, cross-section, dimensional tolerances and supply as straight lengths or coils. Agree melt-flow characteristics, permitted recycled content and additives with the factory. Approve a sample weld using the buyer's sheet, equipment and welding procedure before accepting the production formulation.

UK REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances supplied in mixtures or articles. Ask for formulation information covering pigments, fillers and other additives, then check applicable restrictions for sale in Great Britain. Agree that changes to resin grade or additives need buyer approval.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 metres of polypropylene welding rod under 3916 90 50 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,500. Duty at 6% is £570. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,070, so it is £2,014. Import taxes total £2,584; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £570 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: check batch identification and the supplier's material certificate against the approved resin grade, additives and recycled-content specification.

Dimensions: measure the cross-section along sampled rods and check ovality, straightness, coil condition and fit through the intended welding nozzle.

Weld trial: weld production samples to the intended sheet and inspect fusion, porosity and separation during an agreed joint test.

Packing: check colour against the approved sample, surface cleanliness, protected ends and batch labels. Use the quality inspection guide to prepare the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A similar colour does not establish material compatibility. An unapproved resin substitution or changed melt-flow behaviour can alter feeding and fusion. Dirty rods, inconsistent cross-sections and damaged coils can disrupt welding or leave defective joints.

Keep an approved rod sample and a welded reference joint. Compare each production batch with them before release, and investigate a failed trial before accepting the shipment. A satisfactory sample does not approve later changes to the formulation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on polypropylene welding rods from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 6% duty for 3916 90 50 90, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control.

Can I use any polypropylene rod with polypropylene sheet?

Approve the resin grade and melt-flow characteristics with the sheet supplier, then trial the rod with your actual sheet and welding equipment.

What should I check before selling welding rods in Great Britain?

Check the formulation against applicable UK REACH restrictions. Obtain information on pigments, fillers and other additives rather than relying on a general supplier assurance.

How do I check a production batch?

Compare material records, cross-section, colour and cleanliness with the approved specification, then make a sample joint using the intended sheet.
