Sourcing cyclocross bicycles from China
Non-electric cyclocross bicycles from China fall within a heading carrying 14% to 15% ordinary duty, usually 14% for ball-bearing bicycles, plus 48.50% residual anti-dumping duty. New bicycles must meet applicable supply safety rules; check brake setup and boxed assembly instructions. Cambridge China Bridge sources non-electric cyclocross bicycles.

UK duty on non-electric cyclocross bicycles
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8712 covers bicycles and other cycles that are not motorised. Ball-bearing bicycle lines carry 14% ordinary duty from China; other cycle lines carry 15%, apart from unicycles. For a conventional ball-bearing cyclocross bicycle shipped directly from China, check 8712 00 30 90. The routing entries apply to their named dispatch countries; the other-construction entry needs classification confirmation. See the wider non-electric road bicycle guide.
The supplied snapshot records 48.50% residual anti-dumping duty on the bicycle lines, additional to ordinary duty. It records no suspensions or countervailing duty. Before costing an order, have your broker check the overseas exporter and any applicable exporter-specific treatment. A specified exporter’s duty amount requires a valid commercial invoice with the prescribed accompanying declaration; without the invoice or declaration, the residual amount applies.
The tariff also attaches a DCMS Export Licence entry with an age-based document waiver. Official cultural-goods guidance says there are no licensing requirements for importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain. Ask your broker to confirm how the tariff entry and waiver apply to your new bicycles. Confirm construction and dispatch route using finding your commodity code before placing the order.

Specify the cyclocross build and assembly state
Fix frame geometry by size, frame and fork materials, tyre and rim compatibility, and clearance around the fitted tyre for mud. Specify axle interfaces, wheel retention, brake mounts, rotors, gearing, cable or hose routing and replaceable derailleur hangers. Agree a component list and require approval before substitutions. State whether bicycles arrive assembled or with parts removed, and approve packaging that protects forks, rotors and rear derailleurs.
For consumer sales in Great Britain, bicycles must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. For assembled bicycles within the supply regulations, specify a bicycle bell, the required reflectors and hand-operated brakes with the right lever operating the front brake and the left lever operating the rear. Marketing a catalogue bicycle for racing does not itself establish a statutory exemption; check any exemption claim against the actual categories.
Bicycles supplied with unassembled parts need correct assembly and adjustment instructions, a list of readily available standard tools, and any required special tools. They must be capable of assembly to the prescribed equipment requirements. Trial the instructions on the approved boxed sample and agree testing that represents the proposed cyclocross use through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 12 non-electric cyclocross bicycles; residual anti-dumping duty is additional under 8712 00 30 90, invoiced at £9,500 free on board, with £1,999 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,499. Duty at 14% is £1,609.86. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,108.86, so it is £2,621.77. Import taxes total £4,231.63; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,609.86 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Frame and fork: compare size and geometry with the approved drawing; inspect welds or bonded joints, dropouts, mounting faces and transport damage.
Wheels and clearance: check wheel retention, bearing play, wheel alignment, tyre seating and clearance with the specified tyre fitted.
Brakes and transmission: check lever orientation, brake function, rotor rubbing, hose leaks, gear indexing and chain retention through the agreed functional test.
Boxed assembly: unpack an arrival sample, check the component list, bell, reflectors, instructions and tool provision, then assemble and adjust it. Use quality inspection explained to define the report.

What goes wrong
A sample has adequate tyre clearance, but the production tyre or rim changes and mud clearance disappears. A substituted brake caliper needs a different mount, or the rear wheel sits off-centre. Component names alone do not fix compatibility: keep drawings, interfaces and the approved build list together.
Transport can bend rotors or derailleur hangers, while a boxed bicycle may lack the tools or clear instructions needed for adjustment. A generic frame report may also describe a different fork or assembly. Match evidence to the shipped build, assemble arrival samples and hold affected stock while discrepancies are resolved.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on cyclocross bicycles from China?
The snapshot gives 14% ordinary duty for ball-bearing bicycles and 15% for other cycle construction, plus 48.50% residual anti-dumping duty. Ask your broker to check any exporter-specific treatment.
Are cyclocross race bikes exempt from bicycle supply rules?
A racing description alone does not establish exemption. The statutory categories include brakeless enclosed-track bicycles and bicycles built to an individual person’s design for that person’s competitive use.
Which brake lever should operate the front brake?
For assembled bicycles within the supply regulations, the right-hand lever must operate the front brake and the left-hand lever the rear brake.
What should I specify for a boxed cyclocross bicycle?
Fix the assembly state, component list, tyre clearance and packing protection. Require assembly and adjustment instructions, a standard-tool list and any necessary special tools; trial the boxed sample.
