Sourcing mineral EDM dielectric oils from China
Mineral EDM dielectric oils from China have candidate tariff rates of 2% to 4%, with conditional 0% suspensions for specified unblended feedstocks. Classification depends on the oil, not its trade name. Hazardous oils need a safety data sheet, and Russian-feedstock sanctions need checking. Cambridge China Bridge sources mineral EDM dielectric oils.

Duty on finished oils and separate feedstocks
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2710 covers non-crude petroleum oils and preparations containing at least 70% petroleum oils by weight as their basic constituents, as well as waste oils. This guide concerns unused mineral EDM dielectric oils. The table gives classification candidates and separate feedstocks, rather than interchangeable codes for a finished fluid.
Electrical insulating oils under 2710 19 93 00 carry 2% duty from China; other medium oils under 2710 19 29 90 carry 4%. The listed base oils carry 2%, with conditional 0% suspensions. The medium-oil suspension is restricted to specified hydrocarbon fractions. These suspensions exclude mixtures and preparations. The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the commodity code using composition, distillation data and intended use; see the wider lubricants guide.
The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control on restricted goods and technologies to these lines. The Russian-oil prohibitions also cover co-mingled oil products containing products made in a third country using Russian crude. Ask for refinery and feedstock traceability, and have your customs broker confirm the restriction and any licensing requirement before shipment.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical insulating oils | 2710 19 93 00 | 2% | None |
| Other medium oils, subject to composition and distillation characteristics | 2710 19 29 90 | 4% | None |
| Hydroisomerised base oil, viscosity index 80 to under 120; full specification applies | 2710 19 99 40 | 2% | None |
| Hydroisomerised base oil, viscosity index 120 or more; full specification applies | 2710 19 99 60 | 2% | None |
Specify the dielectric fluid for your EDM machine
State the machine model, sinker or hole-drilling application, electrode and workpiece materials, and whether the oil will replace or mix with an existing fluid. Specify mineral base oil identity, additives, kinematic viscosity at an agreed temperature, flash point, dielectric breakdown performance, water and particle limits, odour and compatibility with seals and filters.
Agree test methods and acceptance limits with the machine supplier. Obtain a batch certificate of analysis and test the proposed fluid in the intended process before approving production. Compare flushing, discharge stability, surface finish and electrode wear with the current fluid. Require the factory to obtain approval before changing its base oil or additive package.
For hazardous oil, obtain an English safety data sheet for Great Britain and settle the hazard label against its classification. Supply-chain businesses are responsible for correct labelling and packaging before sale. Check the UK REACH registration position for the substances being imported, including substances in a blend.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative drum-packed mineral EDM dielectric oil order for a small workshop under 2710 19 93 00, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,800. Duty at 2% is £96. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,896, so it is £979.20. Import taxes total £1,075.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £96 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the drum labels, batch numbers, certificate of analysis and safety data sheet to the approved formulation.
Fluid properties: test viscosity, flash point, water and dielectric performance against the agreed methods and limits.
Contamination: sample the delivered oil for sediment, suspended particles and water; retain a sealed, labelled batch sample.
Packing: check closures, seals, leaks and drum damage, and reconcile the delivered quantity with the packing list.

What goes wrong
A clear-looking oil can still contain water or particles. A substituted base oil can change viscosity, flushing and flash point; a fluid that worked in a supplier's demonstration may perform differently with your machine, electrodes and workpiece. Avoid approving a batch on colour or the word 'dielectric' alone.
Hold a batch that differs from the agreed specification while you investigate. Keep the approved sample and arrival sample identifiable, and compare laboratory results with the factory's certificate. Use testing and certification support to arrange the agreed checks.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on mineral EDM oil from China?
The supplied tariff facts show 2% for electrical insulating oils and 4% for other medium oils. Specified separate feedstocks may qualify for 0% suspensions. Confirm the exact code and suspension conditions.
Can I use transformer oil as EDM dielectric oil?
Do not assume interchangeability. Ask your machine supplier to approve the viscosity, flash point, dielectric performance and compatibility, then trial the fluid in your process.
Does mineral EDM oil need a safety data sheet?
A hazardous oil needs a supplier safety data sheet. Obtain an English version for Great Britain and check that its product identity and hazard classification match the delivered oil and label.
What should I test before accepting an EDM oil batch?
Check viscosity, flash point, water, particles and dielectric performance against agreed limits. Match the results to the batch certificate and inspect drums for leaks or contamination.
