Sourcing metal trophies from China

Metal trophies classified as base metal ornaments carry 0% UK duty from China, whether plated with precious metal or otherwise. Consumer trophies must be safe; confirm with the relevant authority whether small accessible parts need lead checks under UK REACH. Cambridge China Bridge sources metal trophies.

Duty on base metal trophies

Heading 8306 covers base metal ornaments alongside bells, frames and mirrors. For metal trophies classified as ornaments, the relevant lines distinguish precious-metal plating from other finishes. The table shows cup and statuette variants sharing these codes. See the wider heading guide for other products.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, both ornament lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines. The heading's 2% frame and mirror rate does not apply to trophies classified as ornaments.

Confirm the commodity code using the finished trophy's materials, construction and function. Send photographs, the alloy specification, plating details and base material to your customs broker, especially for mixed-material awards.

Specify the trophy, base and engraving

Specify whether the trophy is cast alloy or fabricated sheet metal, its dimensions and weight, cup or figure design, handle attachment and base material. Agree the plating metal, thickness, colour and lacquer, plus how the stem attaches to the base. A gold-coloured finish does not identify the plating metal.

Approve engraving artwork, spelling, placement and contrast on the actual finish. Agree whether engraving is done at the factory or after arrival. Keep an approved assembled sample, and specify individual wrapping and supports that prevent handles and figures moving inside the box.

Consumer trophies must be safe under general product safety law. Check sharp edges, stability and secure attachments. Confirm with the relevant authority which UK REACH lead restrictions and exemptions apply to articles supplied to the public that children could put in their mouths. Assess small accessible decorations and agree relevant alloy and finish testing.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 432 metal trophy cups, illustrative order under 8306 29 00 00, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,600, so it is £4,320. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Assembly: check that the trophy stands level, the base stays secure and handles, stems and figures do not loosen during handling.

Finish: compare colour with the approved sample; check plating thickness, pits, scratches, peeling and tarnish, including around joints.

Engraving: check names and artwork against the approved file, alignment, legibility and adhesion of any separate nameplate.

Packing: inspect arrived cartons for damage, unpack sampled trophies and check for bent handles, broken bases and rubbing marks. Use the inspection guide to agree checks before dispatch.

What goes wrong

Thin plating can tarnish or peel, and porous castings leave pits visible through the finish. Tall figures on narrow bases can topple; loose stem fixings make the cup wobble. Engraving may expose a different metal colour or become hard to read on a curved surface.

Approve the complete trophy rather than a finish swatch alone. Check attachment strength and stability with the intended base, then inspect the trophy after a packed-carton handling test. Separate metal surfaces from abrasive packing and prevent heavy bases striking the cup.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on metal trophies from China?

Metal trophies classified under 8306 21 00 00 or 8306 29 00 00 carry 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff record. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed.

Does gold-coloured plating change the trophy's commodity code?

Colour alone does not identify precious-metal plating. Obtain the actual plating specification and confirm whether the precious-metal-plated ornament line applies.

Do metal trophies need lead testing?

Assess the alloy, finish and accessible parts.

What should I check before approving trophy engraving?

Check the actual trophy with the proposed engraving: spelling, artwork, position, contrast and readability on curved surfaces. Keep the approved sample and artwork for inspection.
