Duty on metal sleigh bells

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8306 covers non-electric bells and similar articles of base metal, alongside ornaments, frames and metal mirrors. Loose metal sleigh bells are covered here under 8306 10 00 00. The table shows product variants sharing that code, rather than separate tariff lines.

The supplied record gives 0% duty for goods from China under the bell line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. This rate applies to the bells considered here; it does not describe every product in the heading.

Send photographs, material details and the intended use to your customs broker to confirm the commodity code, especially for bells supplied on straps or as part of a finished decoration or plaything. For the wider bell category, see metal cowbells.

Specify the shell, striker and bell sound

State the shell material, diameter, wall thickness, slot shape, attachment-loop opening and finish. Specify whether brass means solid brass or a brass-coloured coating. Agree the striker material, acceptable sound and how the striker is retained. Approve a sample attached to the actual ribbon, cord or strap, then keep it for production comparison.

Consumer bells must be safe to use. If the finished product is designed or intended for children's play, assess whether toy rules apply and establish compliance before sale. Agree checks for accessible sharp edges, detachable strikers and alloy or coating composition. Match test samples to the production materials and finish, with testing and certification support where needed.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 8,000 loose steel sleigh bells; illustrative order with illustrative FOB and freight values under 8306 10 00 00, invoiced at £1,600 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,200, so it is £440. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Sound: shake sampled bells using the same movement as the approved sample; check for silent bells, trapped strikers and inconsistent tone.

Retention and edges: check that strikers remain enclosed during the agreed handling test; inspect slots, seams and attachment loops for burrs, cracks and sharp edges.

Material and finish: compare the shell material, dimensions and coating with the specification; check rust, flaking, exposed metal and colour variation.

Packing: check counts, size separation and protection against crushing and rubbing; shake samples again after the agreed transit test. Arrange a shipment inspection.

What goes wrong

A crushed shell or excess coating can trap the striker and silence the bell. Uneven slots and different striker materials can change the sound between batches. Weak seams can release the striker, while rough loops can cut ribbon or scratch hands. Thin plating and damp packing can leave rust or stains.

Approve sound and finish together, then inspect production bells after packing tests. Record any change to shell material, striker or coating before accepting it. Check the finished assembly as well as the loose bell, particularly when it will be handled by children.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on metal sleigh bells from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% under 8306 10 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control.

Are metal sleigh bells classed as toys?

They may be if designed or intended for children's play; confirm the applicable toy classification with Trading Standards. Assess the finished product and intended use before ordering; a decorative loose bell and a children's plaything need separate consideration.

Why do some sleigh bells arrive without ringing?

The shell may be crushed, the striker may be missing or trapped, or coating may obstruct movement. Compare production samples with the approved bell and repeat the sound check after packing tests.

What should I specify for brass-coloured sleigh bells?

State whether the shell is solid brass or coated steel, then agree coating, colour, attachment-loop dimensions and striker material. Approve the sound and finish on the same sample.
