Metal nail file duty: 2%

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8214 covers other articles of cutlery and manicure or pedicure sets and instruments, including nail files. Metal nail files fall within 8214 20 00 00. The table shows product variants within this same commodity line.

The supplied tariff record gives 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control on this line. The duty range for the metal nail files covered here is therefore a single rate of 2%.

Confirm the material, manual operation and pack contents using our commodity code guide. For mixed tool ranges, see the manicure sets and nail clippers guide.

Specify the steel and filing surface

Specify the steel grade, body dimensions, thickness, tip shape, handle construction and surface finish. State whether the filing surface is cut into the metal or applied as an abrasive coating. Approve the filing action on agreed nail test material, rather than relying on photographs or a supplier's description of fineness.

For consumer files sold in Great Britain, confirm the applicable requirements under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 with the relevant authority. Agree checks for burrs, exposed tips, handle movement and pack protection. The regulations cover products intended for, or reasonably likely to be used by, consumers.

Agree cleaning instructions and test samples using the method you intend to recommend. If you plan to claim suitability for disinfection or autoclaving, check the complete file, including its handle and coating, after that treatment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20,000 individually packed metal nail files; FOB and freight values are illustrative. under 8214 20 00 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,200. Duty at 2% is £304. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,504, so it is £3,100.80. Import taxes total £3,404.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £304 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Filing action: compare sampled files with the approved sample on the same test material; check for snagging, uneven abrasion and loose abrasive particles.

Body and handle: check dimensions, straightness, tip finish and edges; test fitted handles for movement and inspect joints for gaps.

Finish and cleaning: inspect for rust, flaking and scratches; repeat the agreed cleaning test and check the surface and handle afterwards.

Packing: check protective sleeves, branding, cleaning instructions and quantities against the approved pack; ensure tips cannot puncture the packaging. Use our quality inspection guide to agree the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

Files can look alike but behave differently. An uneven filing surface snags nails, an abrasive coating sheds particles, and poorly finished edges scratch the user. Thin bodies bend, fitted handles loosen, and scratched plating exposes metal that can rust.

A sample that survives a quick rinse may fail under the cleaning method stated on the pack. Compare production samples with the approved file and repeat the agreed cleaning checks before shipment. Record changes to the steel, coating or handle rather than accepting a visually similar substitute.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on metal nail files from China?

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, metal nail files under 8214 20 00 00 carry 2% duty from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Should I specify stainless steel or plated steel?

Name the steel grade and any plating in the specification. Test corrosion resistance after your agreed cleaning method; a shiny finish does not establish that the file is stainless steel.

Can metal nail files be disinfected or autoclaved?

Agree the intended treatment with the factory and test the complete file afterwards. Check for rust, coating loss, handle damage and changed filing action before making that claim.

Does this guide cover glass nail files or electric nail drills?

This guide covers manual metal nail files. Confirm the commodity code and applicable requirements separately for glass files and powered tools.
