UK duty on metal emergency exit sign plates

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 November 2026, heading 8310 covers sign-plates and similar plates of base metal, excluding heading 9405. This guide covers metal emergency exit plates without a permanently fixed light source. The tariff file contains only the commodity line 8310 00 00 00; the table shows product variants sharing that code.

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls listed. Signs with a permanently fixed light source are classified separately, as explained in our wider metal sign plates guide.

Confirm the commodity code using the plate material and whether it incorporates a light source. Supply photographs and a construction description when checking classification.

Specify the exit pictogram, arrow and fixing

For offices and shops in England, official fire-safety guidance says a sign must be in pictogram form to comply with the safety signs regulations. Include the escape pictogram in the approved artwork rather than ordering a plate bearing only exit wording.

Agree the green background, white pictogram, arrow direction and any supplementary wording with the premises buyer. Specify aluminium, stainless steel or coated steel, thickness, dimensions, corner treatment, printing or marking method, and screw holes or adhesive backing. Match each artwork to its intended location before production.

State the viewing conditions, cleaning products and indoor or outdoor exposure. Ask for a finished sample on the actual metal and coating. Treat a claim that a coating glows in darkness as something to verify with sample testing and supporting reports.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of aluminium emergency exit sign plates, not a supplier quote under 8310 00 00 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,300. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,300, so it is £660. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Artwork: compare each design with the approved proof, checking the escape pictogram, arrow direction, wording and colour contrast. Keep different arrow variants separately identified.

Plate and finish: measure dimensions and fixing-hole positions; check flatness, coating coverage, deburred edges and rounded corners against the order.

Marking: use the agreed cleaning or rub test on samples and check for fading, smearing, scratching or lifting of the printed layer.

Fixing and packing: trial the adhesive on the intended surface or check screw-hole fit. Check for bent plates and face scratches on arrival. Use our inspection guide to brief the inspection.

What goes wrong

A factory can copy the wrong arrow from a previous artwork, mix directions within cartons or reduce pictogram clarity when resizing a design. Approve each artwork separately and identify cartons by design and direction.

Printed layers can rub off during cleaning, adhesive can lift from unsuitable surfaces, and thin plates can bend in transit. Test finished samples with the intended cleaning products and mounting surface, then agree protective packing before shipment.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
