0% duty for decorative metal ornaments

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8306 covers non-electric base metal bells and gongs, statuettes and other ornaments, metal photograph and picture frames, and metal mirrors. This guide concerns decorative wall plaques classified as ornaments. See the wider heading guide for the other products.

For goods from China, precious-metal-plated ornaments under 8306 21 00 00 and other ornaments under 8306 29 00 00 both carry 0% duty. The supplied tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines. The table shows manufacturing variants sharing these ornament codes; frames and mirrors elsewhere in the heading carry 2%.

Confirm the commodity code using the finished product's material, construction and decorative purpose. Give your customs broker photographs and details of any frame, backing or additional function before treating a wall plaque as an ornament.

Specify the plaque, finish and hanging method

Specify the metal or alloy, sheet thickness or casting weight, overall dimensions, relief depth and edge treatment. Supply approved artwork showing lettering, colours and the intended distressed finish. Agree whether the plaque is flat or deliberately curved, and define acceptable variation against an approved physical sample.

Specify coating on the back and edges as well as the face, and state whether use is indoors or outdoors. Agree hanging-hole positions, brackets, welds and supplied fixings. Consumer plaques sold in Great Britain must be safe under general product safety law. Assess sharp edges and falling hazards, and agree clear fitting instructions for the intended mounting arrangement.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative wholesale order of painted pressed metal decorative wall plaques under 8306 29 00 00, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,600, so it is £4,320. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Shape and edges: measure against the drawing, check flatness or the agreed curve, and inspect punched holes, corners and rear edges for burrs.

Artwork and coating: compare spelling, print alignment, colour and distressing with the approved sample. Check coating adhesion, scratches, exposed metal and coverage around edges and hanging holes.

Hanging fittings: check bracket position, welds and attachment strength against the agreed test. Hang sampled plaques using the specified arrangement and check that they sit as intended.

Packing and arrival: check individual wrapping and separators, then examine unpacked plaques for dents, rubbing, rust and bent brackets. Use the inspection guide to organise checks against the approved specification.

What goes wrong

Thin sheet metal bends in cartons, punched edges retain burrs, and brackets distort so plaques hang unevenly. Printing can shift against embossed details or use the wrong artwork revision. An uncontrolled distressed finish can leave exposed metal rather than the appearance approved by the buyer.

Approve a finished sample with its actual hanger and packing. Record acceptable colour and distressing, test the hanging assembly, and check packed samples for face rubbing and deformation. For outdoor plaques, agree corrosion testing appropriate to the intended exposure before accepting the supplier's durability claim.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on metal decorative wall plaques from China?

Decorative plaques classified as base metal ornaments carry 0% duty under 8306 21 00 00 or 8306 29 00 00. The supplied tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on these lines.

Does precious-metal plating change the duty?

It changes the ornament line to 8306 21 00 00, but both that line and other base metal ornaments under 8306 29 00 00 carry 0% duty from China.

What should I specify for outdoor metal wall plaques?

Specify the intended exposure, metal, coating system and coverage of the back, edges and holes. Agree corrosion testing and acceptance criteria rather than relying on an outdoor-use description.

How do I check whether the hanging fittings are secure?

Agree an attachment-strength test for the finished plaque. Inspect welds and brackets, then hang samples using the intended mounting arrangement and check for movement or deformation.
