Sourcing lightweight muslin from China
Lightweight cotton muslin fabric from China normally pays 8% UK duty. Heading 5208 has a 4% medical-fabric suspension, which does not cover ordinary muslin simply because it is loosely woven. Textile labels must show fibre content. Cambridge China Bridge sources lightweight cotton muslin fabric.

Duty on lightweight cotton muslin
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 5208 covers woven fabric containing at least 85% cotton by weight and weighing not more than 200 g/m². The selected muslin lines are plain weave weighing not more than 100 g/m². Specify the actual construction rather than relying on the name muslin.
The selected non-medical lines carry 8% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import controls recorded in the supplied tariff facts. Elsewhere in the heading, unbleached fabric for making bandages, dressings and medical gauzes under 5208 11 10 00 has a 4.00% suspension. Its footnote excludes mixtures, preparations and products made up of different components containing these products.
Confirm finish, fibre content, weave and measured weight before choosing the commodity code. For the wider heading, see cotton voile fabric.

Specify the weave and washed handle
State cotton content, plain-weave construction, yarn count, thread density, weight, usable width and roll length. Distinguish an open, soft muslin from a denser fabric sold under the same name. Approve samples both before and after washing, including softness, transparency, shrinkage and edge fraying.
Specify whether the fabric is unbleached, bleached, dyed or printed, and approve shade and finish against a retained sample. Textile labels must show fibre content. For dyed skin-contact fabric, request colourway-specific reports for restricted azo dyes under UK REACH, as described in the published cotton-fabric guides.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10,000 metres of dyed lightweight cotton muslin fabric under 5208 31 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,900. Duty at 8% is £1,032. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,932, so it is £2,786.40. Import taxes total £3,818.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,032 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Construction: check fibre content, weight, thread density and usable width against the approved sample.
Washing: check shrinkage, distortion, softness and colour transfer using the agreed wash procedure.
Appearance: inspect rolls against light for missing yarns, holes, slubs, oil stains and uneven printing; compare shades between rolls.
Packing: check roll lengths, lot labels and dry protective wrapping on arrival. Use the quality inspection guide to agree inspection coverage.

What goes wrong
A soft sample can become a harsher bulk fabric when the yarn or finish changes. Loose construction can pull out of shape during cutting and sewing, while excessive shrinkage reduces usable yield. Approve a washed cutting and sewing trial before accepting the production lot.
Shade differences, hidden weaving faults and damp packing can make otherwise usable muslin unsuitable for your intended product. Keep roll and dye-lot identities so affected stock can be isolated and compared with retained samples.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on lightweight cotton muslin from China?
The selected non-medical plain-weave muslin lines carry 8% duty. The 4.00% suspension elsewhere in heading 5208 is for specified unbleached medical fabric.
Does cotton muslin need a fibre label?
Textile labels must show fibre content. Check that the declared cotton content matches the supplied fabric.
How do I check muslin shrinkage?
Measure marked samples before and after the agreed washing and drying procedure. Compare dimensional change and distortion with your specification.
Is muslin fabric the same as finished baby cloths?
This guide covers fabric in rolls. Finished cloths have their own product specification; see muslin baby cloths.
