Sourcing lightweight cotton sateen from China
Lightweight cotton sateen from China carries 8% UK duty across the selected finishes. Heading 5208 covers woven fabric containing at least 85% cotton by weight and weighing no more than 200 g/m². Textile labels must show fibre content. Cambridge China Bridge sources lightweight cotton sateen fabric.

Duty by fabric finish
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 5208 covers woven fabrics containing 85% or more cotton by weight and weighing not more than 200 g/m². For sateen, establish the actual weave and finish before selecting an other-fabrics line. A glossy sample alone does not establish its construction.
The selected unbleached, bleached, dyed and different-coloured-yarn lines each carry 8% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for these lines. The heading's medical plain-weave suspension does not apply to these sateen lines.
Confirm the commodity code against tested fibre content, weight, weave and finish. See the cotton woven fabrics guide for the wider heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

| Unbleached lightweight cotton sateen | 5208 19 00 00 | 8% | None |
| Bleached lightweight cotton sateen | 5208 29 00 00 | 8% | None |
| Dyed lightweight cotton sateen | 5208 39 00 00 | 8% | None |
| Lightweight cotton sateen woven from different-coloured yarns | 5208 49 00 00 | 8% | None |
Specify the sateen construction and finish
Specify cotton content, yarn count, yarn density, sateen construction, weight, usable width and the intended face. Record whether the fabric is mercerised, calendered or otherwise finished. Approve a physical sample for sheen, handle and opacity, then compare it again after the intended washing process.
Agree acceptance criteria for shrinkage, washing and rubbing fastness, tear strength, snagging and seam slippage. For garment or bedding use, test a sewn sample as well as loose fabric. Keep approved shade samples and identify the dye lot on each roll.
Textile labels must show fibre content. For skin-contact uses, confirm applicable chemical restrictions with the relevant authority; request colour-specific test reports rather than accepting a general supplier declaration. Arrange testing and certification around the intended use and finish.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business order: 2,200 metres of dyed lightweight cotton sateen under 5208 39 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,900. Duty at 8% is £1,032. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,932, so it is £2,786.40. Import taxes total £3,818.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,032 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Construction: check fibre content, weight, yarn density and usable width against the approved specification.
Face: inspect for float snags, broken yarns, reed marks, oil stains and uneven sheen under consistent lighting.
Shade: compare rolls and dye lots, including edge-to-centre variation, and keep samples before cutting.
Performance: check washing shrinkage, rubbing fastness and the sewn sample; match roll identities and lengths to the packing list.

What goes wrong
A surface finish can give the sample a sheen that fades after washing. Loose construction can snag or allow seams to open, while dye-lot differences become visible when panels are joined. Compare washed approval samples with production samples before releasing the shipment.
On arrival, inspect rolls before cutting and keep suspect dye lots separate. Record faults with roll identities and retain fabric samples for the supplier discussion. Use the quality inspection guide to define what the inspection report must record.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on lightweight cotton sateen from China?
The selected heading 5208 sateen lines carry 8% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for these lines.
Is shiny cotton fabric always sateen?
No. Check the woven construction as well as the finish. Approve washed samples so that temporary surface sheen does not become the acceptance standard.
Does cotton sateen need a fibre label?
Textile labels must show fibre content. Check that the declared cotton content matches the fabric, and plan the fibre labelling for garments or home textiles made from it.
What should I check before cutting the rolls?
Check usable width, shade between rolls, edge-to-centre colour differences, snags and weaving faults. Test shrinkage and keep roll and dye-lot identities with retained samples.
