Sourcing LED grow lights from China
LED grow luminaires from China carry UK duty of 2% to 4%, depending on material and classification. Confirm the applicable electrical safety, EMC and RoHS requirements for mains-powered models with the relevant authority. Specify spectrum and canopy coverage, and match compliance documents to the supplied driver and light assembly. Cambridge China Bridge sources LED grow lights.

UK duty on LED grow luminaires
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, the selected LED grow luminaire lines under heading 9405 carried 2% duty for metal or other materials and 4% for plastics or, in the ceiling and wall category, ceramics. The heading covers lighting fittings and parts, alongside illuminated signs. These rows concern complete grow luminaires, rather than separately supplied bulbs or modules.
The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions on these selected lines. It attaches an import control of mercury to 9405 11 40 90. Official guidance says this control concerns intentionally added mercury. Ask the broker to confirm applicability to the actual product. The record also attaches a DCMS Export Licence measure; ask the broker to confirm its relevance to the transaction.
Treat the table as possible classifications, not a code assigned merely because a lamp grows plants. Send the broker photographs, housing materials, mounting details and the light-source design, then confirm the commodity code. See UK import duty and VAT for costing and the LED high-bay lights guide for wider heading coverage.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other LED grow luminaires, of metal or other materials, not hand-made | 9405 42 39 90 | 2% | None |
| Other LED grow luminaires, of plastics | 9405 42 31 00 | 4% | None |
| LED ceiling or wall grow luminaires, of other materials, not hand-made | 9405 11 90 90 | 2% | None |
| Other LED ceiling or wall grow luminaires, of plastics or ceramics | 9405 11 40 90 | 4% | None |
Specify spectrum, canopy coverage and drivers
Define the crop, growing stage, installation layout, hanging height and whether the lamp supplements daylight or supplies the growing light. Agree the spectral distribution, photosynthetic photon output, photon efficacy and a canopy intensity map at the agreed height. Request measured results for the complete luminaire, with input power and test conditions, rather than accepting chip specifications or lumen claims as the purchase specification.
Freeze the emitter selection, driver model, cooling arrangement, dimming interface, connectors and suspension hardware. State the expected humidity and cleaning method. Mains lighting must meet electrical safety, EMC and RoHS requirements; lamps and luminaires also carry WEEE producer-registration responsibilities. Have a testing provider assess ecodesign and energy-labelling scope for the exact light source and control gear before approving artwork. Arrange testing and certification around the production model.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 400 metal-housed LED grow luminaires; FOB value and freight below are illustrative. under 9405 42 39 90, invoiced at £22,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £25,000. Duty at 2% is £500. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £25,500, so it is £5,100. Import taxes total £5,600; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £500 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Light output: compare the measured spectrum, photon output and canopy map with the approved sample at the agreed hanging height and dimming setting.
Driver and heat: verify driver identity, input power, dimming operation and temperature after sustained operation; investigate flicker, shutdowns and unevenly lit bars.
Construction: inspect suspension points, fasteners, cable strain relief, connectors and seals; test the claimed ingress protection and check for bent bars or cracked boards after transport.
Documents and labels: match the model and components to the declaration and test reports. Check conformity marking, importer contact details and understandable English instructions before release for sale in Great Britain.
What goes wrong
A factory substitutes emitters or drivers after sample approval, changing the spectrum, photon output or heat load. A canopy map taken at a different hanging height can disguise weak coverage at the edges. Dimming may work on the sample but fail with the buyer's controller. Loose suspension hardware and poorly sealed connectors become problems during installation.
Keep an approved sample and a controlled bill of materials. Require written approval for substitutions, repeat relevant tests after a change and compare arrival samples with the purchase specification. Hold units with unexplained shutdowns, damaged wiring or documents naming a different assembly while the cause is investigated.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on LED grow lights from China?
The selected complete LED grow luminaire lines carry 2% or 4%, depending on material and classification. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing measures on these lines.
Does CE marking alone prove a grow light is compliant?
Check the declaration, technical documentation and test reports against the exact production model. A mark alone does not show whether the supplied driver and light assembly match the assessed design.
What performance data should I request for a grow light?
Request measured spectral distribution, photosynthetic photon output, photon efficacy, input power and a canopy intensity map at your agreed hanging height and dimming setting.
What should I check when the shipment arrives?
Compare emitters and drivers with the approved sample, test light output and dimming, inspect wiring and suspension hardware, and check transport damage, labels and model-specific documents.
