Sourcing industrial protocol gateways from China

UK duty on the supplied industrial protocol gateway-related lines is 0% throughout. For wired gateways sold in Great Britain, check electromagnetic-compatibility conformity and importer identification. Prove protocol conversion with the intended equipment. Cambridge China Bridge sources industrial protocol gateways.

Duty and classification for industrial protocol gateways

Heading 8517 covers communication apparatus and parts. A gateway receiving, converting and transmitting data is a candidate for 8517 62 00 00. The remaining table rows describe conditional equipment categories and separately imported accessories or parts, rather than alternative codes to choose freely for a complete gateway. For related equipment within the wider heading, see industrial cellular routers.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 12 December 2026, all supplied lines show 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension is listed. The selected lines have no attached import controls. Elsewhere in the heading, 8517 14 00 00 has a supplementary-unit import entry; confirm the declaration requirement with your customs broker if importing telephones classified there. Import VAT is separate.

Give your broker the data-conversion functions, interface diagram, radio features and shipment contents. Confirm classification through finding your commodity code. The worked order uses illustrative FOB and freight inputs, not a supplier quotation. See UK import duty and VAT for the calculation method.

Specify protocol roles and data mapping

Name the protocols on each side, supported versions and whether each interface acts as a client, server, master or slave. Specify serial wiring, isolation, termination, connector pin assignments and power supply. Agree register or tag mapping, byte order, scaling, signed values, polling behaviour and how communication faults are reported. Approve a sample using the intended controller and field devices.

Record the hardware revision, firmware, protocol licences and configuration software. Agree simultaneous connections, update behaviour under load, configuration backup and restoration, administrator access and operation without a supplier cloud account. Test recovery after power loss, disconnected cables and unavailable devices. State whether stale values must be flagged or replaced with an agreed fault value.

For wired gateways sold in Great Britain, check the manufacturer's electromagnetic-compatibility conformity assessment and importer identification. Confirm hazardous-substance compliance and retain the declaration of conformity. Individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. CE marking remains recognised under the Great Britain electromagnetic-compatibility rules. Match supporting documents to the supplied gateway and adaptor through testing and certification.

Radio-equipped variants need radio-equipment safety, electromagnetic-compatibility and spectrum checks. Importers must not place radio equipment on the Great Britain market unless it conforms with the essential requirements. Commercial importers supplying electrical equipment to the UK market should confirm their producer responsibilities and registration requirements with the relevant authority, including how the producer definition applies to imports solely for their own use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial batch of boxed wired industrial protocol gateways for an integrator under 8517 62 00 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,000, so it is £600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Interfaces: check terminal assignments, serial wiring, isolation claims, network connectors, power polarity and mounting against the approved sample and specification.

Conversion: check mapped addresses, byte order, scaling, signed values and read or write behaviour with the intended devices; compare source values with values received by the controller.

Recovery: interrupt power and communications, then check restart, reconnection, fault indication, stale-data handling and restoration of the saved configuration.

Identity and documents: match hardware, firmware, licences and model labels to the approved configuration, conformity documents and English instructions. Record acceptance checks in a quality inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A gateway can support the named protocols yet fail the intended application because its protocol role, register mapping or supported data types differ. Incorrect byte order or scaling can produce plausible but wrong readings. Test known input values and authorised write commands through the complete conversion path before approving production.

A quiet bench demonstration can hide polling delays, dropped connections and stale values under the agreed load. Firmware changes or missing licences can remove needed functions, while supplier-controlled accounts can block configuration recovery. Record the tested configuration and require approval before substitutions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on industrial protocol gateways from China?

The supplied lines all show 0% duty, including 8517 62 00 00. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed. Confirm classification against the actual functions; import VAT is separate.

Which commodity code covers an industrial protocol gateway?

8517 62 00 00 is a candidate for apparatus receiving, converting and transmitting data. Give your broker the actual functions and interfaces. Separately imported parts need their own classification assessment.

Will a gateway work with my existing controller?

Match protocol versions, client or server roles, wiring, register mapping, byte order and data types. Approve a working sample with your controller and field devices rather than relying on a protocol name.

What should I ask the gateway factory to supply?

Request the interface diagram, mapping example, configuration backup, firmware identity, licence details, English instructions and model-matched conformity documents. Include the supplied power adaptor in the review.
