Sourcing hydrogenated fish oil from China
Hydrogenated fish oil from China carries 10% to 12% UK duty, depending on immediate pack size. For food use, ask the relevant port health authority to confirm exporting-country and establishment eligibility, pre-notification and documents appropriate to the product's risk category. Settle the intended use before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources hydrogenated fish oil.

Duty depends on immediate pack size
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 1516 covers partly or wholly hydrogenated, inter-esterified, re-esterified or elaidinised fats and oils and their fractions, whether refined or not, but not further prepared. Hydrogenated fish oil in immediate packs not exceeding 1 kg falls under 1516 10 10 10 at 12%; larger immediate packs fall under 1516 10 90 10 at 10%.
The supplied tariff records show no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension for these fish-oil lines. They attach veterinary, CITES, seal-product, organic-product and waste import controls. These shared fish and marine-mammal lines do not establish which controls apply to a particular fish-oil shipment. Give your customs broker the species, processing history, intended use and any organic or waste status before dispatch.
The table separates partial and full hydrogenation as purchasing specifications; these variants share commodity codes. Confirm the commodity code using the processing description and immediate pack size. For the wider heading, see hydrogenated fats and oils.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partly hydrogenated fish oil, immediate packs not exceeding 1 kg | 1516 10 10 10 | 12% | None |
| Partly hydrogenated fish oil, larger immediate packs | 1516 10 90 10 | 10% | None |
Specify the hydrogenation and intended use
Specify the fish species and source, food, feed or technical use, partial or full hydrogenation, and whether the oil has been blended or further prepared. Agree the melting range, solid fat profile, iodine value, free fatty acids, moisture, impurities and oxidation tests with the receiving processor. Ask for a batch analysis and a retained sample rather than accepting a generic fish-oil specification.
For food use, ask the relevant port health authority to confirm exporting-country and establishment eligibility, pre-notification, the product's risk category and whether a health certificate or commercial documents are needed. Confirm the applicable contaminant limits for marine oils for human consumption with the relevant food safety authority. Check the route for the actual hydrogenated product before ordering; a tariff code alone does not establish import eligibility.
For feed and technical fish oil, ask APHA to confirm whether the animal by-product route applies and which category, import conditions and documents are relevant. Containers for fish oil covered by the non-food import guidance must indicate that the contents are not for human consumption. Keep the intended use consistent across the specification, labels and shipping documents.
For CITES specimens, an import permit is required; ask your broker to check the source species. Seal products for trade require a seal catch certificate, so investigate any marine-mammal ingredient. If buying as organic, each consignment from China needs a Great Britain certificate of inspection; confirm that the processed product qualifies before using an organic claim. For oils that may be waste, ask the relevant environmental authority and your customs broker to confirm waste status and any shipment documents or evidence needed; see our modified oils guide.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1 tonne of hydrogenated fish oil in sealed drums under 1516 10 90 10, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,000. Duty at 10% is £500. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,500, so it is £1,100. Import taxes total £1,600; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £500 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the batch, fish source, processing description and intended use to the order and analysis certificate.
Performance: test the melting range, solid fat profile and iodine value against the agreed specification; trial the batch in the buyer's process.
Condition: check oxidation results, odour, colour, moisture and impurities on an independent sample, including applicable contaminant testing for food use.
Packing and records: check seals, leaks, batch markings and storage records on arrival, and reconcile the import documents with the delivered goods. Use quality inspection to agree sampling before shipment.

What goes wrong
A supplier offers ordinary refined fish oil against an order for hydrogenated oil, or supplies a batch with a melting profile that does not suit the buyer's process. Blending, inconsistent hydrogenation or oxidation can leave the material unusable despite a familiar product name. Approve a tested sample and make the agreed properties part of the purchase specification.
Paperwork can describe food use while the batch and labels describe technical use, or the establishment details can fail to match the shipment. Resolve these discrepancies before loading. For a new supplier, use factory verification to check the processing equipment, batch records and laboratory evidence.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on hydrogenated fish oil from China?
The supplied tariff records show 12% for immediate packs not exceeding 1 kg under 1516 10 10 10, and 10% for larger immediate packs under 1516 10 90 10. Neither fish-oil line shows a trade remedy or suspension.
Can I import food-grade hydrogenated fish oil from any Chinese factory?
For food use, ask the relevant port health authority to confirm exporting-country and establishment eligibility. Confirm eligibility for the actual product, pre-notification and the documents required for its risk category before ordering.
What should I specify for hydrogenated fish oil?
Specify the source species, intended use, partial or full hydrogenation, melting range, solid fat profile, iodine value, oxidation criteria and packing. Agree batch testing and a retained sample.
Does technical-grade hydrogenated fish oil use the food import route?
Ask APHA to confirm whether animal by-product import conditions apply to the proposed feed or technical fish oil. Confirm the category and documents with APHA, and check the non-food container labelling requirement.
