Sourcing hydrogenated coconut oil from China
Hydrogenated coconut oil from China carries 10% to 12% UK duty, depending on immediate pack size. For food-grade oil, confirm applicable food hygiene, labelling and contaminant requirements with the relevant food authority; a supplier's specification alone does not establish compliance. Cambridge China Bridge sources hydrogenated coconut oil.

Duty depends on immediate pack size
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 1516 covers partly or wholly hydrogenated fats and oils, whether refined or not, but not further prepared. For plain hydrogenated coconut oil from China, immediate packs not exceeding 1 kg fall under 1516 20 91 00 at 12%; larger packs fall under 1516 20 98 80 at 10%. The table repeats these codes for different hydrogenation specifications.
Neither relevant line records anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or a suspension. Both attach organic-product and waste import controls. For organic imports, your company must be based and certified in the UK. Confirm the consignment certificate and exporter eligibility with your organic control body and customs broker. Waste shipment controls apply when the material is waste; confirm the requirements for any waste oil arriving from China with your broker before shipment.
Give your broker the composition, hydrogenation process, intended use and immediate pack weight to confirm the commodity code. For wider heading coverage, see hydrogenated palm oil. Prepared edible blends need separate classification. Use the duty and VAT guide to check the tax treatment of your intended use.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fully hydrogenated coconut oil, immediate packs not exceeding 1 kg | 1516 20 91 00 | 12% | None |
| Fully hydrogenated coconut oil, larger packs, not further prepared | 1516 20 98 80 | 10% | None |
Specify hydrogenation and melting behaviour
Specify coconut oil as the feedstock, whether hydrogenation is full or partial, and whether other oils or additives are present. Agree the melting range, solid fat profile, iodine value, free fatty acids, peroxide value, moisture, colour and odour. Define the test methods and acceptance criteria with the factory rather than accepting an unexplained description such as bakery grade.
For food use, confirm applicable food hygiene, labelling and contaminant requirements with the relevant food authority. Ask for batch analysis and contaminant testing suited to the intended application. Agree packing, storage conditions and remaining shelf life at delivery. Trial the sample in your actual coating, filling or baking process before approving bulk production.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 2 tonnes of hydrogenated coconut oil in bulk packs, illustrative only under 1516 20 98 80, invoiced at £5,200 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,700. Duty at 10% is £770. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,470, so it is £1,694. Import taxes total £2,464; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £770 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Identity: check the batch analysis and production records against the agreed coconut feedstock, hydrogenation status and declared additives.
Performance: test melting behaviour and solid fat profile against the approved sample; check texture after cooling in your intended application.
Condition: check peroxide value, free fatty acids and moisture against the agreed limits, and inspect a sample for unusual odour or discolouration.
Packing and records: check seals, liner condition, leaks, batch identification and storage records on arrival. Match the immediate pack weight to the customs declaration. See the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
A sample can work while the delivered batch has a different melting profile, leaving a coating too soft or a filling waxy. Undeclared blending also makes the agreed specification unreliable. Compare independent batch results with the approved sample and investigate differences before releasing stock into production.
Damaged liners, leaking packs and unexplained odours need investigation on arrival. Another avoidable problem is declaring small immediate packs as bulk oil. Record the actual pack format before shipment and keep the batch documents together.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on hydrogenated coconut oil from China?
The supplied tariff reading shows 12% for immediate packs not exceeding 1 kg under 1516 20 91 00, and 10% for larger packs under 1516 20 98 80, provided the oil is not further prepared.
Does hydrogenated coconut oil need a health certificate?
Official cooking-oil guidance says a health certificate is not normally needed. Confirm the route for your actual composition and use before shipment; this does not remove food compliance obligations.
What should I specify besides food grade?
Specify full or partial hydrogenation, coconut feedstock, any additives, melting range, solid fat profile, iodine value, oxidation indicators and packing. Agree test methods and trial the sample in your process.
Can I import it as organic coconut oil?
Do not rely on the supplier's claim. The tariff attaches an organic control, and your company must be based and certified in the UK. Confirm product eligibility and consignment documents with your organic control body and broker.
