Sourcing hydraulic axial piston pumps from China

Hydraulic axial piston pumps from China carry 0% UK duty on the relevant piston-pump lines. For Great Britain, establish whether the supplied assembly is machinery or partly completed machinery and obtain the corresponding documents. Cambridge China Bridge sources hydraulic axial piston pumps.

Zero duty on the relevant pump lines

Heading 8413 covers pumps for liquids and liquid elevators. For hydraulic axial piston pumps, start the classification enquiry with 8413 50 61 90, described as piston pumps for hydraulic fluid power. The table also includes related hydraulic units, other piston-pump applications and separately supplied pump parts; these are alternatives to investigate, rather than interchangeable codes.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control on these lines. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Confirm the commodity code using the pump mechanism, intended application and whether the shipment contains a pump, hydraulic unit or parts. For the wider heading and a different hydraulic pump mechanism, see hydraulic gear pumps. For fuel dispensing applications, see our fuel dispensing pump sourcing guide.

Displacement, circuit and control configuration

Specify fixed or variable displacement, open or closed circuit, rotation viewed from the shaft end, operating pressure, speed range and required flow. Give the oil type, viscosity and temperature range, inlet conditions and permitted case-drain pressure. Attach drawings for the mounting flange, shaft spline or key, ports and drain connections.

For variable pumps, identify the control configuration, including pressure compensation, load sensing or electrical control where applicable. Agree performance acceptance criteria and request test records identifying the pump, oil temperature, speed, pressure, delivered flow and case-drain flow.

For supply in Great Britain, establish whether the assembly is machinery or partly completed machinery. Machinery covered by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations must meet essential health and safety requirements, undergo conformity assessment and have a declaration of conformity and relevant marking. Partly completed machinery must instead be accompanied by assembly instructions and a declaration of incorporation. Ask the supplier to explain the status of the actual assembly.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 hydraulic axial piston pumps under 8413 50 61 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity and fit: compare model, serial identification, rotation, flange, shaft and port positions with the approved drawing on arrival.

Performance: witness a bench test against agreed operating conditions; check delivered flow, case-drain flow, control response and pressure stability.

Leaks and cleanliness: inspect shaft seals and joints during running; check capped ports, clean internal passages and protection against corrosion.

Documents and packing: match test records and assembly documents to the supplied configuration; check shaft protection and restraints. Set these checks out in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A pump can fit the mounting flange yet have the wrong shaft, rotation or control arrangement. Poor inlet conditions can cause cavitation, while excessive case-drain back pressure can damage seals. Treat these as installation checks as well as supplier checks.

A brief unloaded run can miss low delivered flow or excessive internal leakage under pressure. Ask for a loaded test at the agreed oil temperature and operating conditions, then compare the shipped configuration with the tested pump before accepting it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on hydraulic axial piston pumps from China?

The relevant hydraulic piston-pump line, 8413 50 61 90, carries 0% duty in the supplied tariff data, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Does every hydraulic axial piston pump need a CE certificate?

Establish the assembly's status first. Covered machinery needs conformity assessment, a declaration and relevant marking; partly completed machinery needs assembly instructions and a declaration of incorporation.

How do I check whether a replacement pump will fit?

Compare the mounting drawing, shaft, rotation, port positions, displacement and control configuration. Matching a model name or flange alone does not establish compatibility.

What test should I request before shipment?

Request a loaded bench test at agreed speed, pressure and oil temperature, recording delivered flow, case-drain flow, leakage and control response against agreed acceptance criteria.
