Sourcing hot-rolled half-round bars from China
Hot-rolled non-alloy steel half-round bars from China carry 50% duty on the relevant supplied lines; heading 7214 overall ranges from 0% to 50%. Confirm the line from chemistry, processing and intended use, and check any quota relief before shipment. Cambridge China Bridge sources hot-rolled non-alloy steel half-round bars.

Duty and classification for half-round bars
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 October 2026, heading 7214 covers other iron or non-alloy steel bars and rods, not further worked than forged, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or hot-extruded, including those twisted after rolling. This guide concerns hot-rolled half-round bars with a flat face and a curved face. A half-round section should not be described as a full circular or rectangular section.
The selected lines show 50% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. The site's earlier steel-bar guide describes 0% within available quota and 50% outside it. Ask your broker to confirm current quota eligibility and availability before relying on relief. The reinforcement row applies only where the goods are of a type used for concrete reinforcement.
Give your broker the section drawing, carbon content, free-cutting composition, manufacturing route and intended use to confirm the commodity code. Further cold finishing can change classification; compare the cold-drawn half-round bar guide. Use the duty and VAT guide to assess the landed tax.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-alloy half-round bars, under 0.25% carbon, not for concrete reinforcement | 7214 99 50 00 | 50% | None |
| Other non-alloy half-round bars, 0.25% carbon or more | 7214 99 95 90 | 50% | None |
| Free-cutting non-alloy steel half-round bars, other than deformed reinforcement | 7214 30 00 90 | 50% | None |
| Plain half-round bars for concrete reinforcement, under 0.25% carbon | 7214 99 10 90 | 50% | None |
Specify the half-round profile and steel condition
Specify the steel grade and chemistry, flat-face width, section height, curved profile, corner condition, length, straightness and twist tolerances. State whether the profile must be a true semicircle or another agreed shape. Set limits for scale, pitting and surface seams, and agree any machining allowance. Ask for mill certificates showing heat numbers, chemistry and mechanical results.
For structural supply, agree the intended use and ask which construction-product conformity route applies. CE marking continues to be available for construction products placed on the Great Britain market. Check the documentation for the actual product and use before accepting a supplier's marking claim.
UK authorities may request supply-chain evidence at the border for third-country processed iron and steel. Ask the supplier for billet origin and processing records linked to the supplied heats, and have your broker review them before shipment.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 tonnes of hot-rolled non-alloy steel half-round bars; illustrative order under 7214 99 50 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 50% is £10,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £30,000, so it is £6,000. Import taxes total £16,000; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £10,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Profile: measure flat-face width, section height and the curved contour against the approved drawing; check straightness, twist and cut ends.
Material: match bundle tags to heat certificates, check carbon and free-cutting chemistry, and commission independent testing where the application needs it.
Surface: inspect beneath loose scale for seams, laps, pitting and cracks; check that the agreed machining allowance remains usable.
Bundles: compare lengths, quantities and weights with the packing list; look for bent bars, mixed heats, wet packing and damaged restraints.

What goes wrong
A supplier may quote a nominal half-round size without defining the curved profile or corner shape. Bars can arrive twisted, with uneven section height or deep scale pits that remain after machining. Mixed heats and detached tags make it difficult to connect material results to the bars received.
Classification also fails when a half-round bar is declared as a full round, or a cold-finished product is described as hot-rolled. Resolve the drawing, processing route and certificate requirements before ordering, then arrange checks against them using the quality inspection guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on hot-rolled half-round steel bars from China?
The relevant supplied lines show 50%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed on those lines. Confirm any available quota relief with your broker before shipment.
Which commodity code covers a non-alloy steel half-round bar?
For bars outside the reinforcement and free-cutting categories, consider 7214 99 50 00 below 0.25% carbon or 7214 99 95 90 at 0.25% or more. Have your broker confirm the chemistry, process and use.
What dimensions should I specify for half-round bars?
Specify flat-face width, section height, curved contour, corner shape, length, straightness and twist. Use a drawing rather than a nominal size alone.
Are hot-rolled and cold-drawn half-round bars interchangeable?
Do not assume they are. Agree the surface condition, dimensional tolerances and machining allowance your process needs. Further cold finishing can also change the tariff classification.
