Sourcing cold-drawn half-round bars from China

Cold-drawn half-round non-alloy steel bars from China have a uniform 50% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot. The commodity code depends on steel composition and further working; confirm any quota relief before budgeting. Specify the flat width, crown height and straightness. Cambridge China Bridge sources cold-drawn half-round steel bars.

Recorded duty on half-round steel bars

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7215 covers other bars and rods of iron or non-alloy steel. For cold-drawn half-round bars, distinguish free-cutting steel from other non-alloy grades, then check carbon content. The further-worked row is a classification boundary for bars processed beyond cold finishing, rather than the default for cold-drawn stock.

Every selected line records 50% duty for goods from China, with no separate anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control recorded. Our wider bright steel bars guide discusses quota relief. Official guidance confirms a 50% tariff outside quota. Ask your customs broker to confirm whether relief is available for the exact goods and declaration.

Give your broker the mill chemistry, section drawing and manufacturing route, including any work after drawing. Confirm the commodity code before ordering. For future imports, consult the wider guide and ask HMRC or your customs broker to confirm whether the carbon border adjustment mechanism applies to this heading from 1 January 2027; ask the mill for emissions data when preparing those orders.

Specify the half-round profile

Send a dimensioned section drawing showing the flat face, crown radius, overall width, crown height and edge condition. Agree tolerances for each feature, flat-face flatness, straightness, twist and cut length. State that you want cold-drawn stock, and identify any subsequent grinding, heat treatment or surface treatment.

Specify the steel grade, delivery condition and intended machining, forming or welding operation. Ask for a mill inspection certificate showing chemistry, mechanical results and heat identity. Agree where the inspector should measure the profile and how the bars will be supported during straightness checks.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 30 tonnes of cold-drawn half-round non-alloy steel bars under 7215 50 19 00, invoiced at £27,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £30,000. Duty at 50% is £15,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £45,000, so it is £9,000. Import taxes total £24,000; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £15,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match bundle tags and heat numbers to the mill certificate; check carbon content and the agreed grade.

Profile: measure flat width and crown height along the bars; compare the curved face with the approved profile gauge and check flat-face flatness.

Condition: inspect for drawing seams, scoring, burrs, rust, bow and twist; trial-fit a sample where the curved face seats against another component.

Packing: check dry corrosion protection, restrained bundles and protected ends. If solid wood supports or crates are used, ensure the packaging meets UK import requirements. Record arrival condition before cutting bars; use our inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A bar described only as half-round can arrive with the wrong crown height or a flattened curved face. It may fit a calliper measurement yet fail in a mating groove. Drawing seams can appear during machining, while bowed or twisted stock makes consistent cutting and assembly difficult.

Approve the section drawing and a physical sample before production, then inspect the profile rather than relying on nominal width. Keep heats identifiable through cutting and storage. Budget using the recorded 50% rate until your broker confirms any quota relief, and compare landed-cost assumptions with our duty and VAT guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on cold-drawn half-round steel bars from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot records 50% on every selected line, with no separate anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Ask your broker to confirm any quota relief before budgeting.

Which commodity code covers cold-drawn half-round bars?

Free-cutting steel uses 7215 10 00 00. Other cold-finished non-alloy half-round bars use 7215 50 19 00 below 0.25% carbon or 7215 50 80 00 at 0.25% or more. Confirm the grade and processing.

What dimensions should I give a half-round steel supplier?

Provide flat width, crown height, crown radius, edge condition and cut length. Agree profile tolerances, flat-face flatness, straightness and twist against a section drawing.

How do I check half-round bars on arrival?

Match heat tags to certificates, measure the profile along the bars, check bow and twist, and inspect for seams and rust. Trial-fit a sample in the intended mating component before cutting the batch.
