Sourcing cold-drawn triangular bars from China
Cold-drawn triangular non-alloy steel bars from China carry 50% duty across the relevant lines in the supplied tariff snapshot. Classification depends on free-cutting status, carbon content and further working, rather than the triangular shape alone. Cambridge China Bridge sources cold-drawn triangular steel bars.

Duty and classification for triangular bars
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7215 covers other bars and rods of iron or non-alloy steel. For cold-drawn triangular bars, distinguish free-cutting steel from other grades, then check carbon content. The further-worked row is conditional, for products processed beyond cold-forming or cold-finishing; it is not the default for ordinary cold-drawn bar.
The supplied snapshot records 50% third-country duty for every listed line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing entries, suspensions or attached import controls. It does not identify a steel measure or quota relief. Use this snapshot for budgeting and ask your broker to check the declaration-date tariff before shipment.
Confirm the grade, chemistry and complete manufacturing route using our commodity code guide. Alloy and stainless grades need a different heading. For the wider heading, see our cold-drawn octagonal steel bars guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold-drawn triangular bars of free-cutting steel | 7215 10 00 00 | 50% | None |
| Other cold-drawn triangular non-alloy steel bars, under 0.25% carbon | 7215 50 19 00 | 50% | None |
| Other cold-drawn triangular non-alloy steel bars, 0.25% or more carbon | 7215 50 80 00 | 50% | None |
| Other further-worked triangular bars, subject to classification | 7215 90 00 90 | 50% | None |
Specify the triangular profile, not just a size
Provide a cross-section drawing stating whether the triangle is equilateral or another profile. Define side lengths, height, angles, corner radii and the measurement references. Agree tolerances for the profile, straightness and twist along the bar, together with cut length, end condition and machining allowance.
Specify steel grade, cold-drawn condition, any heat treatment, hardness and surface defect limits. Ask for mill chemistry and heat traceability. UK REACH generally covers substances in articles, so assess the grade and any coating or protective oil for applicable obligations before selling in Great Britain.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 tonnes of cold-drawn triangular non-alloy steel bars under 7215 50 19 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 50% is £10,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £30,000, so it is £6,000. Import taxes total £16,000; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £10,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Profile: compare the cross-section with the approved drawing, including side lengths, height, angles and corner radii. Check along the bar rather than only at a cut end.
Straightness and twist: check the agreed limits and trial the bar in the buyer's fixture. A matching end profile can still bind if its orientation changes along the length.
Material records: match bundle tags and heat numbers to mill chemistry and the agreed grade. Keep supporting records of the input steel's origin and processing history for sanctions checks.
Surface and packing: look for drawing seams, longitudinal scratches, rust and damaged corners. Check end protection, corrosion protection and bundle separation. Use our quality inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong
A supplier quotes a nominal triangle but rounds the corners beyond the drawing, or supplies bars that twist and will not seat in the fixture. Seams can open during machining, while tight strapping damages the corners. Approve a sample against the drawing and trial machining before releasing the production order.
Chinese processing does not remove the UK prohibition on covered steel incorporating covered Russian-origin steel inputs. Such goods are prohibited unless an applicable licence permits import. Traders should be prepared to provide supply-chain evidence. Obtain input-origin and processing records before shipment rather than relying only on the finished bar's Chinese origin.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on triangular steel bars from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot records 50% for all relevant heading 7215 lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Ask your broker to confirm the tariff at declaration.
Which commodity code covers cold-drawn triangular steel bars?
Free-cutting steel uses 7215 10 00 00. Other non-alloy cold-drawn bars use 7215 50 19 00 below 0.25% carbon, or 7215 50 80 00 at 0.25% or more. Confirm the grade and processing.
What dimensions should I specify for triangular bar?
Specify the cross-section on a drawing: side lengths, height, angles, corner radii and measurement references. Agree profile tolerances, straightness, twist, cut length and machining allowance.
Can I import triangular bars drawn in China from Russian steel?
Covered Russian-origin steel inputs can make the finished bars prohibited even after processing in China. Confirm the input history and any applicable licence before ordering.
