Duty and classification for gun cabinets
Heading 8303 covers armoured or reinforced safes and strongboxes, safe doors and deposit lockers, and cash or deed boxes of base metal. This guide concerns gun cabinets constructed as armoured or reinforced safes. The table shows product variants sharing the relevant commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, commodity code 8303 00 40 00 carries 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. These findings concern the recorded tariff line, rather than every cabinet sold for storing guns.
Ordinary gun cabinets that are not armoured safes may be classified as metal furniture. Confirm the commodity code using the construction drawings and product description before ordering. See the safes and cash boxes guide for the wider heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armoured rifle safes | 8303 00 40 00 | 2% | None |
Specify the cabinet around the guns and installation
Specify usable internal height and depth, clearance for scoped rifles, rack spacing, protective lining and the door opening needed to remove guns without contact. Agree body and door steel thickness, weld construction, hinge protection, locking bolt engagement, anchoring holes and any separately lockable inner compartment.
For new cabinets used in dwellings, Home Office guidance recommends conformity with BS7558 (1992). Ask for evidence covering the exact model and compare it with the production drawings. Consumer gun safes in Great Britain fall within the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Assess sharp edges, door movement and stability alongside security.
Agree the lock model, key handling, replacement arrangements and installation instructions. If using an electronic lock, test reset and emergency opening procedures on the sample. Check any fire-resistance claim separately from security performance.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative pallet shipment of reinforced gun safes under 8303 00 40 00, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,000. Duty at 2% is £120. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,120, so it is £1,224. Import taxes total £1,344; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £120 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Construction: measure body and door steel against the agreed drawings; examine welds, hinge protection, door gaps and locking bolt engagement.
Fit: check usable storage space with agreed gun profiles, including scope clearance; confirm that racks and lining prevent contact damage.
Locks: operate every delivered cabinet, check that bolts engage fully, and confirm that keys, inner compartments and any override mechanism work as agreed.
Arrival: photograph pallets and packaging before unloading; check for bent doors, damaged corners, rust and missing fixings. Use the quality inspection guide to plan the checks.

What goes wrong
Advertised capacity can overlook scopes, stocks and the space needed to lift guns out. Thin steel, incomplete welds, weak hinges and shallow bolt engagement can differ from the approved sample. A standard claim on a label should be checked against evidence for the supplied model.
Heavy cabinets can arrive with distorted doors after inadequate blocking or strapping. Poorly positioned anchoring holes complicate installation, while damp packaging encourages rust. Record the fault against the cabinet and packaging, and agree corrective action before accepting a repeat shipment.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on gun cabinets from China?
Armoured or reinforced gun safes classified under 8303 00 40 00 carry 2% duty in the supplied tariff record. Ordinary metal gun cabinets may require a different classification.
Which standard should I specify for a gun cabinet?
Ask the supplier for evidence matching the exact model and construction.
Will scoped rifles fit the advertised gun capacity?
Check usable depth, rack spacing, scope clearance and the removal path using agreed gun profiles. A stated capacity alone does not establish usable space.
Does a security claim also establish fire resistance?
No. Fire resistance is tested separately. Ask for evidence matching the model and the particular fire-resistance claim.
