Sourcing Strongroom Doors from China

Strongroom doors of base metal from China carry 2% UK duty, with no rate variation on the relevant commodity line. Confirm the construction and code before importing; match security evidence to the complete door and frame, and assess any fire claim separately. Cambridge China Bridge sources strongroom doors.

UK duty on strongroom doors

Heading 8303 covers armoured or reinforced safes, strongboxes, doors and safe deposit lockers for strongrooms, together with cash or deed boxes of base metal. Strongroom doors belong to 8303 00 40 00. The table shows product variants within that same commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 25 October 2026, the supplied tariff record shows 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls on the strongroom-door line.

Confirm the commodity code against the door's materials and reinforced construction. For the other products within this heading, see the safes and cash boxes guide.

Specify the door, frame and locking arrangement

Provide drawings showing the clear opening, frame depth, wall interface, threshold, hinge side and opening direction. Agree door and frame materials, reinforcement, bolt arrangement, lock model, finish and supplied fixing components. Ask for assembly instructions, handling information and a packing drawing showing how the frame and door are supported.

Ask the insurer and installer to agree the security evidence for the exact door-and-frame assembly before approving the sample. Verify certificates against the supplied model and lock arrangement. Fire resistance is tested separately from security resistance; ask for evidence covering the proposed installation if fire performance is claimed.

Check the construction-product conformity route for the intended installation with a competent adviser. Official guidance says products not covered or not fully covered by a designated standard may be covered by a technical assessment document. An electronic lock and a motor-driven door need different specification reviews.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 2 strongroom doors with mechanical locks, illustrative only under 8303 00 40 00, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,000. Duty at 2% is £120. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,120, so it is £1,224. Import taxes total £1,344; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £120 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: check the frame dimensions, diagonals, fixing positions and clear opening against the approved drawing; inspect the threshold and wall interface.

Operation: support the assembly as instructed, then check hinge movement, door clearance, full bolt engagement, lock operation and agreed internal release functions.

Evidence: match model identification, lock details and claimed performance to the supporting documents; inspect reinforcement and seals against the approved design.

Arrival: inspect packing before unpacking, then check frame distortion, hinge damage, coating damage, moisture and missing components. Use the inspection guide to organise the record.

What goes wrong

A door can match the opening dimensions yet fail to fit because the frame depth, hinge clearance or wall fixing arrangement was never agreed. Transport damage can twist the frame or shift the hinges, leaving bolts that engage during a factory demonstration but bind after installation.

Documents may describe a different lock or door assembly, while a fire claim may lack evidence for the proposed installation. Record approved drawings and component identities before production, and ask the installer to review the fixing and handling plan before shipment.
