Grain cleaning and milling machines from China
Machines for cleaning, sorting or grading seed, grain and pulses from China, and milling machinery such as roller mills, plansifters and complete flour lines, pay 0% UK duty with no anti-dumping duty. Flour and grain dust is explosive, so equipment for dusty zones must meet the explosive atmosphere rules. Cambridge China Bridge sources milling machinery.
Seed and grain cleaners, graders, colour sorters, roller mills, sifters and flour milling lines from China pay 0% UK duty. Dust explosion rules and an example.

0% duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 26 September 2026, machines for cleaning, sorting or grading seed, grain or dried leguminous vegetables, and machinery used in the milling industry or for working cereals or dried leguminous vegetables other than farm-type machinery, heading 8437, carried 0% on goods from China on all three lines, including parts, with no anti-dumping measure.
Farm-type machinery and feed preparation machines are in heading 8436, and optical colour sorters for other goods may fall elsewhere, so confirm the commodity code for each machine in a line.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Machines for cleaning, sorting or grading seed, grain or dried pulses | 8437 10 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other machinery (roller mills, sifters, purifiers) | 8437 80 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Parts | 8437 90 00 00 | 0% | None |
Machinery and dust explosion rules
Each machine placed on the UK market must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, with a declaration of conformity, marking and instructions in English, and a complete line needs an assessment as an assembly.
Flour and grain dust can form explosive atmospheres, so equipment intended for those zones must meet the Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2016. Ask which machines are certified for which zone, and plan explosion venting or suppression for elevators, filters and silos with the site's own risk assessment.
Specifying a line
Specify the grain and products (flour grades, bran, semolina), capacity in tonnes per day, extraction rate, cleaning section, conditioning, roller mill size and number, sifter and purifier configuration, conveying, dust collection, explosion protection, controls, voltage and supply, and the commissioning, training and spares package.
Worked duty example
Take a hypothetical order of a small flour milling line with roller mills and sifters, entered under 8437 80 00 00: £260,000 free on board plus £14,000 of freight and insurance gives a customs value of £274,000. Flour milling machinery carry no duty, so import VAT of 20% on £274,000, £54,800, is the only tax. A VAT-registered importer normally reclaims it, so the border adds no lasting cost. Step by step: UK import duty and VAT.
Inspection checklist
Explosion protection: check the equipment certification and marking for the dust zones defined in the design, and check explosion vents, earthing and anti-static measures on elevators, filters and ducting.
Build and function: run the roller mills and sifters at the factory, check roll grinding and fluting, gap adjustment and sieve cloth quality, and check motors and drives against the specification.
Food contact and documents: check that parts in contact with grain and flour are food-safe, and check the declaration of conformity, layout drawings, English manuals and spares list before shipment.
What goes wrong
Milling lines fail on capacity, dust and support. Lines do not reach the quoted tonnage or extraction on your grain, equipment for dusty areas lacks certification for the zone, dust collection is undersized, rolls and sieves wear fast, and commissioning and spares support are slow.
Agree performance guarantees and explosion protection in the contract, check certification, and plan commissioning before shipment. See our quality inspection guide.
Cambridge China Bridge sources grain cleaning, sorting and flour milling machinery for UK and overseas mills, checking the builder's references and workshop before an order. See factory verification.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on flour milling machines from China?
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 26 September 2026, milling industry machinery (8437 80 00 00) carried 0% from China.
Are grain cleaners and colour sorters in this heading?
Machines for cleaning, sorting or grading seed, grain or pulses are 8437 10 00 00, at 0%.
Why does flour dust matter for imported machines?
It can explode, so equipment for dusty zones must meet the 2016 explosive atmosphere equipment regulations.
Is there anti-dumping duty?
No line of heading 8437 had a UK anti-dumping measure on 26 September 2026.
