Sourcing gantry milling machines from China
Gantry milling machines from China carry 2% UK duty under the relevant other milling machine lines; gantry boring-milling machines carry 0%. Confirm with the relevant authority the machinery safety requirements for new machines supplied in Great Britain, including conformity marking, a declaration and English instructions. Cambridge China Bridge sources gantry milling machines.

Gantry milling duty: 0% or 2%
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8459 covers machine tools that remove metal by drilling, boring, milling, threading or tapping. For this guide, the relevant families are other milling machines and boring-milling machines. The selected lines carry 2% and 0% respectively for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control.
The gantry layout alone does not settle classification. Give your broker the machine's functions, control specification and tool-changing arrangement. Machining centres with automatic tool change fall under heading 8457 in our published guidance. Confirm the commodity code before ordering, and see our bed-type milling machine guide for related machines within the wider heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Numerically controlled gantry milling machines, other than tool milling machines | 8459 61 90 00 | 2% | None |
| Non-numerically controlled gantry milling machines, other than tool milling machines | 8459 69 90 00 | 2% | None |
| Numerically controlled gantry boring-milling machines | 8459 31 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Non-numerically controlled gantry boring-milling machines | 8459 39 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the bridge, work envelope and test cut
Specify a moving bridge or moving table, clear width between columns, clearance beneath the crossrail, axis travels and usable table area. Define the workpiece envelope with fixtures fitted, table load, spindle taper, torque, speed range and required heads. State the control make, included software functions, coolant and swarf arrangements, electrical supply and installation responsibilities.
Agree accuracy and repeatability limits with a named test method. Ask the factory to cut your representative material across the usable work envelope, including cuts near the columns and at extended ram positions. Request foundation drawings, lifting information, assembly instructions and control backups before dispatch.
For new machinery supplied in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority the applicable essential health and safety requirements of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and the requirements for a declaration of conformity and English instructions. CE or UKCA marking can be used for the Great Britain market. Ask for the compliance documents for the complete supplied machine, including its fitted heads and guards.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a compact numerically controlled gantry milling machine under 8459 61 90 00, invoiced at £96,000 free on board, with £6,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £102,000. Duty at 2% is £2,040. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £104,040, so it is £20,808. Import taxes total £22,848; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,040 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Geometry: check table flatness, spindle run-out, bridge squareness and axis positioning against the agreed acceptance figures; repeat the checks after installation and levelling.
Loaded cutting: machine the agreed test piece and measure flatness, parallelism, surface finish and dimensional consistency across the table; check for chatter with the ram extended.
Safety and documents: check guards, interlocks and emergency stops, conformity marking, the declaration, English instructions and wiring diagrams against the supplied machine.
Packing and arrival: check slide locks, bridge supports, corrosion protection and identification of dismantled assemblies; record arrival damage before assembly. Use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong
A quoted travel can exceed the usable cutting envelope once the head, guards and fixtures are fitted. A satisfactory unloaded accuracy report can also hide chatter or deflection during heavy cuts. Accept the machine against your workpiece and agreed loaded test, rather than relying on a demonstration cut chosen by the factory.
Bridge alignment can change during dismantling, transport and reassembly. Missing alignment records, control backups or assembly instructions make recovery harder. Agree who will rebuild, level and commission the machine, and repeat acceptance checks before production.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on gantry milling machines from China?
The selected other milling machine lines carry 2%; boring-milling lines carry 0%. The supplied tariff snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or import control on these lines.
Does a gantry milling machine need CE or UKCA marking?
New machinery supplied in Great Britain needs conformity marking. CE or UKCA can be used, with the applicable conformity requirements met. Confirm the requirements for a declaration of conformity and English instructions with the relevant authority.
How should I test a Chinese gantry milling machine?
Agree a test piece in your material and measure it across the usable table area. Include loaded cuts with the ram extended, then repeat geometry and cutting checks after installation.
Can I use the same code for every gantry machine?
No. Establish whether it is a milling machine, a boring-milling machine or a machining centre, and whether it is numerically controlled. Give the broker the functions and tool-changing details.
