UK duty on gas tilting bratt pans

Heading 8419 covers non-domestic equipment that treats materials through temperature changes, including cooking. Commercial gas tilting bratt pans are candidates for 8419 81 80 90. The table shows configurations sharing that code, plus a possible line for separately imported dedicated parts; individual components need their own classification check.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, both selected commodity lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control on these lines. This tariff position does not replace product conformity checks.

Give your customs broker the operating description, gas heating arrangement, tilting mechanism and details of any separately shipped parts to confirm the commodity code. The wider catering equipment guide covers related kitchen purchases.

Specify the gas system, pan and tilting mechanism

Specify natural gas or bottled gas, the intended supply pressure, burner arrangement, ignition and flame supervision. Obtain conformity evidence covering the exact model and gas configuration before ordering. Confirm the applicable conformity assessment and marking route with the relevant authority; do not rely on a generic laboratory certificate headed CE. Check the declaration of conformity and English instructions.

Specify usable pan capacity, cooking surface dimensions, pan material and thickness, temperature control, lid balance and pouring lip. Describe manual or powered tilting, how the pan holds position and access for cleaning. Name the steel grade and any food-contact seals or coatings; obtain food-contact evidence and confirm with the relevant authority whether material-specific rules require declarations.

Agree the installation information with the intended installer, including gas connection, ventilation, access and any electrical supply for controls or tilting. Request an exploded parts drawing and identify replacement ignition parts, gas controls, tilt-drive components and seals. Have the exact model's evidence checked through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 10 gas tilting bratt pans, illustrative order under 8419 81 80 90, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,000, so it is £3,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Documents: match the delivered model and rating plate to the conformity evidence, gas category and supply pressure. Check the declaration, manufacturer identification and English installation, use and servicing instructions.

Gas operation: arrange a competent test of ignition, flame stability, connection tightness and flame-failure shut-off on production equipment before shipment. Retain the test record against the inspected model.

Pan and heating: inspect welds, corners, cooking surface and lid alignment. Run an agreed cooking test to assess heat distribution, temperature control and pouring without uncontrolled splashing.

Tilting and arrival condition: check smooth movement, position holding, stability and accessible pinch points. On arrival, inspect the frame, pan alignment and shipping restraints for damage before commissioning. Plan these checks using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A certificate for a similar pan can conceal a different burner, gas configuration or control system. Check model identifiers and the full conformity history rather than accepting a certificate image. A change to the gas system should trigger an evidence review before shipment.

Uneven heating, rough welds that trap food, a poorly balanced lid and a tilt mechanism that drifts can make the delivered pan unsuitable for kitchen work. Put the cooking and loaded-tilt acceptance checks in the purchase specification. Photograph arrival damage and record defects before arranging remedial work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on gas tilting bratt pans from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% for commercial cooking equipment under 8419 81 80 90, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm that the exact pan belongs in this line.

Is a supplier's CE certificate enough for a gas bratt pan?

Check independent conformity assessment covering the exact model and gas configuration, the declaration and the marking route. A generic laboratory certificate does not establish the full conformity history.

Can I order the same bratt pan for natural gas and bottled gas?

Specify the intended fuel and supply pressure separately. Check that the conformity evidence covers the supplied configuration; do not accept a verbal assurance that changing the injectors is sufficient.

What should I test before shipping a gas tilting bratt pan?

Arrange competent gas-operation checks, then inspect heating consistency, pan welds, lid balance, pouring and loaded tilting. Match the production model and rating plate to the documents.
