Sourcing frozen oyster meat from China

Frozen oyster meat from China has a single listed UK duty rate of 8%, with no recorded trade remedy or suspension. Frozen bivalves for human consumption must come from an authorised country; confirm China's current eligibility with the relevant authority before arranging an import into Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge checks whether a product can be imported before any order is placed.

8% duty does not establish import permission

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, frozen oysters under 0307 12 00 00 carried 8% duty for goods from China. Heading 0307 covers molluscs, whether in shell or not. The table shows commercial forms sharing the supplied frozen-oyster line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. No anti-dumping or countervailing measure or suspension is recorded for this line.

The tariff attaches veterinary and organic import controls. Frozen bivalve molluscs for human consumption must come from an authorised country; ask the relevant authority to confirm whether Chinese-origin frozen oyster meat is currently eligible for entry into Great Britain. For an admissible supply from an authorised country, confirm advance notification, appropriate health certification and the designated border control post route with the relevant authority or your customs broker.

Organic imports from China would additionally need a Great Britain certificate of inspection for each consignment and recognised exporter certification arrangements; these documents do not overcome the country restriction. Confirm the raw product and processing details through finding your commodity code. For the wider heading, see frozen mussel meat.

Specify oyster meat before discussing an order

Start with country eligibility rather than a sample purchase. Record the oyster species, harvesting country and area, processor identity, and whether the meat is raw or has been heated or otherwise prepared. Do not treat a supplier's approval for other fishery products as proof of approval for oysters.

For an admissible alternative supply, specify whole meats or pieces, size grade, individually frozen or block frozen, agreed glaze, drained meat weight, additive policy and pack format. Define the intended cooking use and agree a sample assessment for texture, flavour, shell fragments and thawing loss.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative tariff calculation only: 2 tonnes of raw frozen oyster meat; not an admissible shipment from China to Great Britain under 0307 12 00 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 8% is £1,400. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,900, so it is £3,780. Import taxes total £5,180; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,400 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Eligibility and documents: before dispatch, check country and establishment approval for the actual product and match the lot identity across documents and carton marks. Do not arrange a Chinese-origin frozen oyster meat shipment to Great Britain until the relevant authority confirms its eligibility.

Meat and glaze: for admissible alternative supplies, deglaze and drain samples using the agreed method, compare meat weight with the specification, and inspect for shell fragments, grit and broken meats.

Frozen condition: on arrival, examine temperature records, damaged seals, freezer burn and clumping. Assess thawed texture and odour against the agreed sample; retain suspect stock for investigation.

Labelling and testing: check that allergen information clearly identifies oyster as a mollusc. Agree laboratory checks for microbiological contamination, marine biotoxins and chemical contaminants with a food laboratory rather than relying on appearance.

What goes wrong

The main purchasing failure is assuming that an available tariff code or an approved seafood factory makes Chinese oysters admissible. The authorised-country restriction applies to frozen bivalves. Removing the shell or freezing the meat does not provide an oyster exception.

For admissible alternative supplies, quality disputes can involve excess glaze, variable meat size, shell fragments and poor texture after thawing. Record the sampling and weighing method in the specification, then compare retained samples and arrival records. The quality inspection guide explains how to document findings.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on frozen oyster meat from China?

The supplied frozen-oyster line, 0307 12 00 00, carries 8%, with no recorded trade remedy or suspension. This tariff rate does not permit importation from China into Great Britain for human consumption.

Can I import Chinese frozen oyster meat into Great Britain?

Confirm China's current eligibility with the relevant authority before ordering for human consumption. Frozen bivalves must come from an authorised country. General fishery-product approval is insufficient.

Does freezing or removing the shell make Chinese oysters admissible?

No. The country restriction covers frozen bivalve molluscs. The separate exception concerns certain scallop adductor muscles, not oyster meat.

What should I specify for an alternative frozen oyster supplier?

Specify species, harvesting origin, raw or prepared form, meat size, freezing method, glaze, drained weight, additives and pack format. Check country eligibility before sampling.
