0% duty, with refrigerant controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8476 covers automatic goods-vending machines and their parts. Frozen-food vending machines incorporating refrigeration fall under 8476 81 00 00; other vending-machine parts are listed under 8476 90 90 00. Both carry 0% duty for goods from China. The table shows different machine configurations sharing the same tariff line. Confirm separately shipped parts individually.

The recorded lines have no anti-dumping or countervailing duties and no tariff suspensions. The tariff attaches ozone-depleting-substance and fluorinated-gas controls to refrigerated machines, and fluorinated-gas controls to the listed parts. New machines must not use ozone-depleting substances. For HFC-charged equipment, registration and quota authorisations apply from an annual total equivalent to 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide; imported F-gas equipment needs correct labelling and must comply with product bans.

Give your customs broker the refrigerant name and charge, and confirm the required declarations and document codes before shipment. Confirm the commodity code from the actual specification. See hot-food vending machines for comparisons within the wider heading, and the import duty and VAT guide for tax calculations.

Specify frozen storage and pack delivery

Specify the foods and their packaging dimensions, required storage temperature, usable capacity, loading access and site conditions. Agree the refrigerant and charge, defrost method, condensate handling, temperature logging, remote alarms and a vending lockout when storage exceeds the agreed temperature. Test spiral, belt or lift delivery with your actual frozen packs, including soft bags and rigid meal trays.

For sale in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority the applicable electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility requirements, including a declaration of conformity and UKCA or CE marking. The importer must ensure instructions are in easily understandable English. If you run a food business using the machine, you must make and follow a food-safety management system.

Agree the UK payment provider and reader before production. Specify how failed vends, refunds, lost connectivity and power recovery should work. Include cleaning access, replacement door seals, dispensing motors and controller support in the purchase specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one frozen-food vending machine under 8476 81 00 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Frozen storage: record product temperatures across a loaded cabinet, including after replenishment and defrost. Compare independent measurements with the display, and test alarms and the agreed vending lockout.

Delivery and payments: vend your actual packs from every selection. Check bridging, crushed trays, torn bags, collection access, failed-vend detection and the agreed payment and refund sequence.

Documents and labels: match the model and refrigerant charge to the rating plate, declaration of conformity and test reports. Check conformity marking, refrigerant labelling and English instructions.

Arrival condition: check door alignment, seals, hinges, locks, glass and the cooling compartment for transport damage. Complete a loaded acceptance trial at the operating site. Use the inspection guide to plan shipment and arrival checks.

What goes wrong

A cabinet display can show the target temperature while packs near the delivery opening remain warmer. Frost can obstruct the chute or stop the collection flap closing. Soft bags catch in spirals, rigid trays jam during transfer, and loading beyond the agreed layout blocks airflow. A loaded trial reveals problems that an empty demonstration misses.

Payment hardware may arrive configured for another market, while alarms or refunds stop working when the connection fails. Transport damage can leave a door seal leaking. Agree acceptance tests and the corrective action for failures before shipment, and keep machines out of service until the agreed checks pass.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on frozen-food vending machines from China?

The recorded duty is 0% for refrigerated machines under 8476 81 00 00 and other vending-machine parts under 8476 90 90 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Can I use any refrigerant in a frozen-food vending machine?

New equipment must not use ozone-depleting substances. HFC-charged imports can require registration and quota authorisations. Confirm product bans, labelling and customs declarations from the actual refrigerant and charge.

How do I check that the machine keeps food frozen?

Test a loaded cabinet with independent product-temperature measurements during normal vending, replenishment and defrost. Check remote alarms and the agreed vending lockout, rather than relying on the display alone.

Will frozen meal trays and bags dispense reliably?

Test the exact packs in the proposed delivery mechanism. Check each selection for bridging, tearing, crushing and failed-vend detection, then repeat the trial with the cabinet loaded as it will be on site.
