Sourcing frozen fish belly strips from China

The selected frozen fish belly strip lines carry 6% to 14% UK duty from China. Confirm the species and presentation, plant approval, health paperwork and border arrangements before ordering; wild-caught fish also needs its applicable catch documents checked. Cambridge China Bridge sources frozen fish belly strips.

Duty depends on species and presentation

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 0304 covers fish fillets and other fish meat, fresh, chilled or frozen. This guide concerns plain frozen belly strips. The selected Atlantic cod and processing-use chub mackerel lines carry 6% duty from China, Atlantic salmon 8% and herring 14%. These rows assume other fish meat matching the species and presentation in the underlying tariff line.

No anti-dumping or countervailing measure or suspension is recorded for these selected lines. All carry veterinary and organic import controls; the selected cod, mackerel and herring lines also carry illegal fishing controls. Before importing into Great Britain, confirm plant approval, health certification, IPAFFS notification and designated border control post arrangements. For wild-caught fish, confirm with the relevant authority or your customs broker whether a validated catch certificate is required and, where fish from another country's catch is processed in China, whether an endorsed Chinese processing statement is needed.

For organic strips, confirm the certificate of inspection requirements; the exporter’s control body issues the certificate. The tariff also flags export CITES controls on the selected salmon and mackerel lines: ask your customs broker to confirm their relevance. Confirm the commodity code using the scientific species name, cut and intended processing. See frozen fish portions for the wider product family.

Specify the belly cut and usable fish weight

Specify the species, wild or farmed origin, and whether the strips are belly flaps or cuts from a fillet. Agree skin-on or skinless presentation, rib and pin-bone tolerance, strip width, thickness, length range and acceptable ragged edges. Define the belly membrane and dark flesh trimming against a reference sample.

Agree net fish weight after removing glaze, the weighing method, freezing format and pack arrangement. Record added water and other ingredients. Cook samples using the intended method and compare fat rendering, shrinkage and texture. Check current import restrictions before ordering because fish imports may be prohibited for public health or biosecurity reasons.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 tonnes of frozen Atlantic salmon belly strips under 0304 99 21 13, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 8% is £1,400. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,900, so it is £3,780. Import taxes total £5,180; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,400 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Cut and bones: compare sampled strips with the approved cut; inspect rib bones, pin bones, skin, belly membrane, dark flesh and torn edges.

Weight and glaze: remove glaze using the agreed method, weigh the fish separately from packaging and compare usable yield with the specification. Plan sampling through quality inspection.

Condition and cold chain: review transport temperature records and check arrival temperature, freezer burn, thawing signs, discolouration and damaged seals. Compare thaw loss and cooked texture with the reference sample.

Identity and labels: match species, batch and factory details to the applicable health and catch documents. Confirm the applicable fish labelling requirements with the relevant authority, including whether commercial designation, scientific name, catch area and production method must be shown. If selling strips loose, provide allergen information.

What goes wrong

A carton can meet its gross weight while supplying too little fish after glaze removal. Belly strips vary in fat content and thickness, so inconsistent trimming can produce uneven cooking and shrinkage. Rib fragments, excess membrane and broken strips can reduce usable yield. Record defects against the agreed sample and weighing method.

Paperwork can fail even when the strips look acceptable. Species, batch or factory details may differ between cartons and certificates, delaying clearance. Check approval and document consistency before shipment, then keep arrival photographs, temperature records and weighed samples linked to their batch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
