Sourcing frozen boneless fish cheeks from China
The selected frozen boneless fish cheek lines carry 6% to 8% UK duty from China. Confirm the species-based code, approved plant, health paperwork and border arrangements before shipment; wild-caught fish also needs catch-document checks. Cambridge China Bridge sources frozen boneless fish cheeks.

Duty depends on species and presentation
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 0304 covers fish fillets and other fish meat, fresh, chilled or frozen. This guide concerns plain frozen boneless cheek meat. The selected Atlantic cod, processing-use Argentine hake and other specified whitefish lines carry 6% duty from China; Atlantic salmon carries 8%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension is recorded for these selected lines.
The selected lines carry veterinary and organic import controls; the selected whitefish lines also carry illegal fishing controls. For Great Britain, confirm plant approval, health documentation, advance notification and a designated border control post. Medium and high risk imports need a health certificate. For wild-caught fish, confirm validated catch certificates and, where another country's catch is processed in China, an endorsed processing statement. Ask your customs broker to confirm the common health entry document requirement attached by the tariff.
For organic cheeks, confirm import requirements with your broker; the certificate of inspection is issued by the exporter's control body. The salmon line also lists an export CITES control: confirm its relevance with your broker. Confirm the commodity code from species, cheek-meat presentation and intended use; the Argentine hake row specifies processing use. These are candidate classifications, not a universal cheek code. See frozen fish portions for the wider heading.

Specify cheek meat, trimming and usable weight
Specify the fish species and scientific name, genuine cheek meat rather than mixed head trimmings, skin removal, removal of jaw fragments and residual bones, and the acceptable piece-size range. Agree whole cheeks or broken pieces, individual freezing or blocks, glaze, additives and pack arrangement. Define fish weight after removing glaze and retain an approved sample.
Cook samples using your intended catering method and compare tenderness, shrinkage and water loss. Ask the supplier to identify the processing plant and connect each batch to its catch, processing and health documents. Health certificates must be completed and signed by an authorised certifying officer.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 tonnes of frozen boneless Atlantic cod cheeks under 0304 95 25 90, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 6% is £1,050. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,550, so it is £3,710. Import taxes total £4,760; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,050 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Meat and trimming: check that samples match the agreed cheek shape and texture, with no substituted head trimmings, jaw fragments, residual bones or unwanted skin.
Weight and glaze: sample across cartons, remove glaze using the agreed method and compare fish weight, piece sizes and broken-piece content with the specification.
Cold chain and condition: check arrival core temperature is at or below −18 °C and review transport records. Check freezer burn, visible parasites, discolouration and excessive drip after thawing.
Labels and documents: match the commercial designation, scientific name, production method, catch area and batch details across cartons and relevant certificates. Include the agreed deglazing and bone checks in quality inspection.

What goes wrong
Mixed head trimmings can pass a vague description of fish cheeks. Poor trimming leaves jaw fragments or bones, while excessive glaze reduces usable fish weight. Uneven pieces cook differently, and thawing followed by refreezing can leave soft flesh and excess water loss. Record findings against the sample and written specification.
Cartons and documents may name different species, batches or processing plants. Check approval and document consistency before shipment, then retain arrival photographs, deglazed weights and temperature records for any supplier claim. Treat boneless as an inspection criterion rather than accepting the carton description alone.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on frozen boneless fish cheeks from China?
The selected lines carry 6% to 8%: Atlantic cod, processing-use Argentine hake and other specified whitefish carry 6%; Atlantic salmon carries 8%. No trade remedy or suspension is recorded for these lines.
Do frozen fish cheeks need a health certificate?
Medium and high risk imports need a health certificate. Confirm your consignment's classification, plant approval, advance notification and designated border control post with your customs broker before shipment.
Does fish cheek meat processed in China need catch documents?
For wild-caught fish, confirm the validated catch certificate. If another country's catch is processed in China, also confirm the endorsed processing statement linking the cheek meat to that catch.
How do I check that frozen fish cheeks are boneless?
Agree a trimming specification and inspect thawed samples for residual bones and jaw fragments. Sample across cartons and compare the meat with the approved cheek sample; a boneless label does not replace inspection.
