Sourcing tipper chassis from China
Engine-fitted tipper chassis from China carry 10% or 18% UK duty, depending on engine type and capacity. Proof of vehicle approval is needed before registration and taxation. Agree the body installation and approval route before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources engine-fitted tipper chassis.

UK duty on engine-fitted tipper chassis
Heading 8706 covers chassis fitted with engines. This guide concerns chassis intended for tipper goods vehicles, rather than finished tippers or separately supplied bodies. The table shows diesel and petrol variants under the relevant codes; repeated codes represent different engine specifications. For broader coverage, see engine-fitted truck chassis.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the relevant China-origin chassis lines carry 18% duty for diesel engines exceeding 2 500 cm³ or petrol engines exceeding 2 800 cm³, and 10% for the other diesel and petrol variants shown. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded. Import VAT is normally 20%.
The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import control and a DCMS Export Licence measure. Vehicle air-conditioning falls within pre-charged equipment guidance. Obtain the refrigerant type and charge quantity, and ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable import requirements and whether the export-labelled measure affects your movement. Confirm engine capacity and the chassis's supplied condition through finding your commodity code.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tipper chassis with diesel engine exceeding 2 500 cm³ | 8706 00 11 00 | 18% | None |
| Tipper chassis with diesel engine not exceeding 2 500 cm³ | 8706 00 99 00 | 10% | None |
Specify the chassis for the tipping body
Agree wheelbase, rear overhang, frame section, axle ratings, suspension, steering position and engine and gearbox models. Give the bodybuilder the proposed body drawing, tipping arrangement and intended loads. Record whether the cab, subframe, hydraulic pump, tank, hoses and power take-off are included, rather than relying on a photograph of a completed truck.
Ask the bodybuilder to confirm mounting positions, clearance during tipping, hydraulic interfaces and the proposed loaded axle distribution. Proof of vehicle approval is needed before registration and taxation. Before ordering, agree who will confirm the approval route for the completed tipper and supply the supporting documents. Match documents to the actual engine, chassis and final body configuration.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of one diesel tipper chassis; freight includes insurance under 8706 00 11 00, invoiced at £41,600 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £44,100. Duty at 18% is £7,938. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £52,038, so it is £10,407.60. Import taxes total £18,345.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £7,938 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the chassis stamping, engine identification, build specification and supplied documents to the order.
Frame and mounting: measure wheelbase and mounting positions against the agreed drawing; examine rails, crossmembers, welds, corrosion protection and transport damage.
Driveline and hydraulics: observe a cold start, record warning lights and leaks, check gear selection, and verify the supplied power take-off and pump interfaces.
Arrival and handover: compare condition with dispatch photographs; check hoses, wiring, loose fittings, keys and manuals. Record discrepancies before body installation through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A chassis advertised as suitable for a tipper may arrive without the agreed power take-off, with incompatible pump connections or with mounting points that conflict with the body design. Compare the actual build with the bodybuilder's drawing before shipment, including space for the exhaust, fuel tank and hydraulic tank.
A running chassis and a supplier's approval document do not settle the completed tipper's approval route. Check the document's vehicle variant and agree responsibility for the final build before ordering. Keep shipping damage separate from fabrication defects by retaining dispatch and arrival photographs.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on tipper chassis from China?
The relevant engine-fitted chassis lines carry 10% or 18%, depending on engine type and capacity. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Can I register an imported tipper chassis immediately?
Proof of vehicle approval is needed before registration and taxation. Agree the route for the completed tipper with the bodybuilder and relevant approval authority before ordering.
Does a tipper chassis include the tipping hydraulics?
Agree this explicitly. List the power take-off, pump, tank, hoses, controls and subframe, and identify which items the chassis supplier and bodybuilder will provide.
What should I check before fitting the tipping body?
Check identity, frame dimensions, mounting positions, axle ratings and hydraulic interfaces against the agreed drawings. Photograph arrival damage and resolve discrepancies before installation.
