Sourcing engine-fitted chassis from China
Engine-fitted chassis from China carry UK duty from 4% to 18%, depending on the intended vehicle and engine category. For road use, plan vehicle approval before first registration and agree who will handle the completed vehicle's approval. Cambridge China Bridge sources engine-fitted chassis.

Duty depends on the vehicle and engine
Heading 8706 covers chassis fitted with engines for vehicles of headings 8701 to 8705. Specify the intended vehicle category, engine type and cylinder capacity before choosing a line. The larger-engine branch includes diesel engines exceeding 2 500 cubic centimetres and spark-ignition engines exceeding 2 800 cubic centimetres, alongside tractor chassis.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 17 November 2026, the supplied lines carry 18%, 6%, 4% or 10% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension is listed. All lines attach a fluorinated greenhouse gas import control. Imported fluorinated-gas equipment must be correctly labelled, including empty equipment. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable control and declaration documents for the actual chassis.
The tariff also lists a cultural-goods export licence measure. Official guidance concerns exports of cultural objects from Great Britain to destinations outside the UK; ask your broker to confirm its relevance to your shipment. Confirm your commodity code against the engine specification, intended vehicle and condition as shipped before ordering.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus or goods-vehicle chassis within the larger-engine tariff branch | 8706 00 11 00 | 18% | None |
| Other chassis within the tractor and larger-engine tariff branch | 8706 00 19 00 | 6% | None |
| Other engine-fitted chassis for passenger cars | 8706 00 91 00 | 4% | None |
| Other engine-fitted vehicle chassis | 8706 00 99 00 | 10% | None |
Match the chassis to the body you will build
Agree wheelbase, track, frame dimensions, body mounting points, axle ratings and the intended completed vehicle weight. Specify engine and gearbox models, steering position, braking system, suspension, tyres, fuel system and wiring interfaces. Request drawings showing the body envelope and mounting restrictions, rather than accepting a catalogue description.
For a vehicle intended for UK roads, plan approval before first registration. Agree with the bodybuilder who will obtain the completed vehicle's approval and what chassis documents they need. Some vehicles are exempt from approval, so confirm the route for the intended vehicle. Have the supplier identify the exact engine, emissions documentation and any fitted air-conditioning equipment before accepting the specification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Pilot batch of engine-fitted chassis for a vehicle bodybuilder, illustrative only under 8706 00 99 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £31,500. Duty at 10% is £3,150. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £34,650, so it is £6,930. Import taxes total £10,080; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £3,150 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match chassis and engine markings to the order, invoice and supplied technical documents.
Frame and mounts: check wheelbase, mounting-hole positions, frame straightness, weld condition and corrosion protection against the agreed drawings.
Running systems: witness engine starting, gearbox operation and checks of steering, brakes, cooling and fluid leaks by a competent technician.
Delivery condition: inspect exposed connectors, capped pipes, lifting damage and loose components on arrival; record discrepancies before body assembly. Use the inspection guide to organise the checks.

What goes wrong
A chassis described only as suitable for a truck can arrive with mounting points that clash with the body, an unsuitable axle rating or a different gearbox. Engine substitutions can also leave the supplied technical documents describing a different build. Make substitutions subject to written agreement and compare the production chassis with the approved drawings.
Do not leave the approval plan until the body is fitted. Missing chassis documents, unsuitable lighting arrangements or an engine specification that the bodybuilder has not checked can create rework. Agree spare-part identification, diagnostic access and English technical manuals before production.
