Sourcing engine-fitted bus chassis from China

Engine-fitted bus chassis from China carry UK duty of 10% or 18%, depending on engine type and capacity. Before ordering, agree the body interfaces and confirm the approval route for the completed bus before its first registration in Great Britain, unless exempt. Cambridge China Bridge sources engine-fitted bus chassis.

UK duty on engine-fitted bus chassis

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8706 covers chassis fitted with engines for vehicles of headings 8701 to 8705. For bus chassis, diesel engines exceeding 2 500 cubic centimetres or petrol engines exceeding 2 800 cubic centimetres fall under 8706 00 11 00 at 18%. Other engine-fitted bus chassis fall under 8706 00 99 00 at 10%. The rows separate engine configurations sharing these codes.

The supplied records show no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension. They attach fluorinated greenhouse gas import control and a DCMS export licence measure. Pre-charged equipment includes vehicles with air-conditioning. Imported products containing regulated fluorinated gas must be labelled. Give your broker the refrigerant and charge details to confirm the import control requirements before shipping. Check the export measure if subsequently exporting the chassis.

Confirm engine type, capacity and intended bus application through finding your commodity code. The cultural-goods guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirement; ask your broker to distinguish this from the attached export measure. For other vehicle applications, see engine-fitted chassis from China.

Match the chassis to the bus body

Specify engine model and capacity, gearbox, axle arrangement, steering position, wheelbase, frame dimensions and body mounting points. Agree axle loads and the intended completed vehicle weight with the bodybuilder. Include drawings showing suspension travel, floor clearance, cooling connections, wiring interfaces and the space needed for the exhaust and emissions equipment.

Before ordering, confirm with the relevant vehicle approval authority whether the completed vehicle needs approval before first registration in Great Britain and whether any exemption applies. Ask the chassis manufacturer and bodybuilder to confirm the approval route and which documents each will provide. Request evidence matching the supplied engine, braking system and chassis configuration. Use testing and certification support to define the document review.

Agree diagnostic access, wiring diagrams, maintenance instructions in English, spare parts identification and lifting points. Specify whether any air-conditioning equipment is fitted and whether it contains refrigerant. Have the broker assess the supplied configuration rather than assuming every bare chassis has the same import-control treatment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a pair of engine-fitted diesel bus chassis under 8706 00 11 00, invoiced at £100,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £105,000. Duty at 18% is £18,900. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £123,900, so it is £24,780. Import taxes total £43,680; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £18,900 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match chassis markings, engine identification, gearbox and axle models to the order, drawings and supplied approval documents.

Body interfaces: measure wheelbase, frame alignment and mounting positions; check brackets, welds, corrosion protection and clearance for the planned body.

Function: witness starting, gear selection, steering and brake operation in a controlled factory test; inspect fuel, oil, coolant and air lines for leaks.

Arrival: photograph frame distortion, damaged pipes, exposed connectors and missing components before unloading or body installation. Compare the delivery with the agreed quality inspection record.

What goes wrong

A substituted engine, axle or gearbox can change the body fit and leave the documents describing a different configuration. Put component identities and a written change-approval process in the order. Resolve discrepancies before accepting shipment, including any effect on the planned vehicle approval.

A running-engine video does not establish frame alignment, brake condition or body compatibility. Poor lifting and unsecured transport can bend brackets or damage air lines. Agree lifting, securing and exposed-component protection with the supplier, and record the chassis condition before loading and on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on bus chassis from China?

The supplied bus-chassis lines carry 18% for diesel engines exceeding 2 500 cubic centimetres or petrol engines exceeding 2 800, and 10% for other engine-fitted bus chassis. No trade remedy or suspension is recorded.

Can I register a bus built on a Chinese chassis?

Confirm with the relevant vehicle approval authority whether the completed bus needs approval before first registration in Great Britain and whether any exemption applies. Confirm the route and supporting documents with the chassis manufacturer and bodybuilder before ordering.

What drawings should I send a bus chassis factory?

Send the body layout and mounting drawings, with wheelbase, frame dimensions, axle loads, floor clearance and cooling, exhaust and wiring interfaces. Identify the engine, gearbox and steering position.

Does a bus chassis need fluorinated-gas checks?

The tariff attaches fluorinated-gas import control. Declare any fitted air-conditioning and refrigerant charge to your broker. Products containing regulated fluorinated gas must be labelled.
