Sourcing fire engine chassis from China
Engine-fitted fire engine chassis point to the 10% residual line, subject to classification; the wider heading ranges from 4% to 18%. Confirm whether the completed vehicle qualifies for the fire and rescue approval exemption. Cambridge China Bridge sources engine-fitted fire engine chassis.

UK duty on engine-fitted fire engine chassis
Heading 8706 covers chassis fitted with engines for vehicles of headings 8701 to 8705. Assess a dedicated fire engine chassis against residual code 8706 00 99 00, rather than assuming that every chassis intended for conversion has the same classification. The other table rows show classification boundaries, rather than alternative fire engine codes. For general goods-vehicle chassis, see engine-fitted truck chassis.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the residual line carries 10% duty for goods from China. The comparison lines carry 18%, 6% and 4%, making the heading-wide range 4% to 18%. The supplied tariff records no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension on these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%.
The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import control and a DCMS Export Licence entry. Cultural-object guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirement. Ask your customs broker to confirm the gas-control requirements and the relevance of the export entry to your movement. Supply the chassis drawings, engine details and intended vehicle function when confirming your commodity code.

Specify the chassis around the fire body
Agree the wheelbase, frame drawing, mounting positions, axle capacities and completed weight distribution with the bodybuilder. Include the water tank, pump, crew, hose lockers and equipment in the load assessment. Specify engine and gearbox models, pump-drive connection, cooling during stationary pumping, steering position, cab supply and access to servicing points.
Official guidance exempts vehicles designed and constructed for and used by fire and rescue forces from vehicle approval. Ask the approval authority whether your proposed completed vehicle meets that description before relying on the exemption. Agree which factory and bodybuilder supply the drawings, identity records and supporting documents.
Vehicle air-conditioning falls within the guidance on equipment pre-charged with fluorinated gas. For a chassis supplied with air-conditioning, obtain the refrigerant type, charge quantity and label photographs. Official guidance requires imported fluorinated gas equipment to be labelled, including correct labelling of empty equipment. Have your broker assess the other gas-control requirements for shipments from China.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of a pair of engine-fitted fire engine chassis, subject to classification; freight includes insurance under 8706 00 99 00, invoiced at £100,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £105,000. Duty at 10% is £10,500. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £115,500, so it is £23,100. Import taxes total £33,600; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £10,500 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match chassis and engine identifiers, gearbox model and supplied equipment against the order, photographs and documents.
Body interfaces: measure frame dimensions, mounting points and clearances; check pump-drive compatibility against the bodybuilder’s signed drawing.
Running systems: witness a cold start, inspect leaks, record diagnostic faults and check steering, brakes and gearbox operation in a suitable test area.
Arrival condition: compare the frame, cab if supplied, exposed connectors and corrosion protection with the dispatch record. Check loose parts, keys and manuals through an agreed quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A general truck chassis may be offered against a fire engine enquiry without enough capacity for the water tank and equipment. Pump-drive location, frame drilling or cooling arrangements can then force changes during body installation. Require the chassis supplier and bodybuilder to agree the same drawing before manufacture.
A brochure describing a fire engine does not establish the approval treatment of the vehicle you will complete. Keep the intended operator and use explicit. Missing diagnostic access, unmatched identifiers or an undocumented refrigerant charge can also leave the buyer resolving problems after arrival.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on fire engine chassis from China?
The residual chassis line carries 10%, subject to classification. Other heading lines range from 4% to 18%. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Do fire engine chassis need UK vehicle approval?
Official guidance exempts vehicles designed and constructed for and used by fire and rescue forces. Confirm whether your completed vehicle qualifies before relying on this exemption.
Can I use a standard truck chassis for a fire engine?
Have the bodybuilder check axle capacities, completed weight distribution, frame mounts, pump drive and stationary cooling. Agree the chassis specification against the intended tank, body and equipment.
What documents should the Chinese chassis factory supply?
Agree identity records, engine and gearbox details, frame and mounting drawings, inspection results, manuals and diagnostic access. Request refrigerant details where air-conditioning is supplied.
