Sourcing electroplating lines from China
Electroplating lines from China carry 0% to 2% UK duty under the relevant lines, depending on their use. Machinery must be safe before being placed on the Great Britain market or put into service. Specify the plating process and test the line with representative workpieces. Cambridge China Bridge sources electroplating lines.

Duty depends on the line's intended use
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 17 December 2026, heading 8543 covers electrical machines and apparatus with individual functions not specified elsewhere in the chapter. Electroplating equipment solely or principally for printed-circuit manufacture falls under 8543 30 40 00 at 0% duty from China. Other electroplating equipment under 8543 30 70 00 carries 2%.
The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty, suspension or attached controls for these equipment lines. The table repeats the general equipment code for different line designs; these are buying specifications, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.
Confirm the commodity code using the process description, intended application, layout and supplied equipment list. Ask your broker to review separately shipped equipment and components. For the wider heading, see electroplating rectifier systems.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rack electroplating lines, subject to classification | 8543 30 70 00 | 2% | None |
| Electroplating lines solely or principally for printed-circuit manufacture | 8543 30 40 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the bath sequence and line boundaries
Define the substrate, deposited metal, coating thickness, adhesion and appearance criteria. Choose rack or barrel handling and provide representative workpiece drawings and loading arrangements. Specify tank working dimensions, bath sequence, tank and lining materials, heaters, agitation, filtration, rinse arrangement and rectifier control. Agree how coating quality and output will be demonstrated using your workpieces.
Separate the equipment package from site work. Allocate responsibility for lifting equipment, extraction ducting, chemical storage, spill containment, rinse-water treatment, foundations, utilities and installation. Request the complete-line conformity documents, English operating instructions, electrical drawings, maintenance access details and spare-parts list. Have a competent specialist review the evidence through testing and certification.
Machinery must be safe before GB market placement or use. Importer responsibilities can also apply when importing directly for your own workplace. Workplace exposure to substances causing ill health must be adequately controlled. In England, business activities must not cause or allow pollution. Ask competent advisers to assess extraction, chemical handling and the proposed effluent route before approving the layout.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative compact manual electroplating line for a small workshop, equipment only under 8543 30 70 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Tanks and pipework: check materials against the approved specification, inspect welds and linings, and perform the agreed leak test. Inspect tanks, supports, valves and unions again after transport.
Handling and controls: have competent personnel test hoist travel, load positioning, guards, emergency stops, interlocks and restart behaviour against the agreed acceptance plan.
Process performance: run representative loads using the agreed bath conditions. Check coating thickness distribution, adhesion, appearance, filtration, temperature control, rinse performance and rectifier stability.
Shipment and installation: reconcile tanks, pumps, cables, pipework and spares with the packing list. Match equipment identification to drawings and documents, then repeat the agreed checks after installation using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong
A demonstration with empty racks does not establish coating quality under production load. Poor electrical contact, uneven workpiece spacing, inadequate agitation and rinse carry-over can undermine the result. Agree acceptance tests on representative parts and record the bath conditions, loading and settings used.
Package gaps emerge when extraction, effluent treatment or site connections are assumed to be included. Tank dimensions can also conflict with doorways, lifting access or maintenance space. Approve the layout and responsibility schedule before manufacture, and require approval before substitutions to pumps, tank materials, rectifiers or controls.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on electroplating lines from China?
The supplied facts show 0% under 8543 30 40 00 for equipment solely or principally for printed-circuit manufacture, and 2% under 8543 30 70 00 for other equipment. Neither lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Do machinery rules apply if I import a plating line for my own factory?
Importer responsibilities can also apply to direct imports for your own workplace. Machinery must be safe before use. Request the line's conformity documents and have a competent specialist review the supplied configuration.
Should I choose rack plating or barrel plating?
Provide workpiece drawings, finish requirements and loading expectations. Ask the factory to demonstrate handling, electrical contact, coating distribution and unloading with representative parts before selecting the arrangement.
What should an electroplating line acceptance test include?
Agree tank leak checks, handling and safety-function tests, rectifier operation and a representative plating trial. Record coating quality, bath conditions and loading, then repeat the agreed checks after installation.
