Sourcing earth resistance testers from China

Earth resistance testers from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant heading 9030 lines, with no listed trade remedies. Safety depends on evidence supporting the claimed measurement category and voltage; calibration should match each instrument. Cambridge China Bridge sources earth resistance testers.

Duty and classification for earth testers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, the selected heading 9030 lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines.

Heading 9030 includes instruments for measuring or checking electrical quantities. A dedicated resistance tester without recording is a candidate for 9030 33 20 90; recording instruments, multifunction meters and separately supplied parts need their own classification assessment. The table describes possible categories, rather than interchangeable codes.

Confirm the commodity code using the functions, recording capability and supplied accessories. See the insulation resistance testers guide for related instruments within the wider heading. For hipot instruments, see our guide to sourcing hipot testers. For RF instruments, see our spectrum analyser sourcing guide.

Specify the earth measurement method

Specify whether you need stake-based testing, clamp testing or selectable methods. Ask the supplier to explain the required connections and limitations of each mode. Define resistance ranges, accuracy by range, display resolution, interference indication, lead lengths, stake construction and the supplied carrying case.

For recording models, agree how readings are stored and exported, and approve an English sample file and manual. Ask for a calibration certificate matched to each serial number, with traceability to national standards for professional use. Match safety reports to the exact instrument, leads and claimed measurement category and voltage.

For Great Britain, electromagnetic compatibility guidance requires manufacturers to supply relevant instructions in English. Under hazardous-substance rules, individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Instruments also bring waste electrical equipment obligations; producers must register annually.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of earth resistance testers without recording under 9030 33 20 90, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Readings: compare sampled instruments across the agreed resistance ranges with a calibrated reference, using the supplied leads and the agreed connection method.

Connections: check sockets, lead continuity, clips, stake strength and clamp closure where fitted; confirm the kit matches the approved packing list.

Evidence: match model and serial numbers to calibration certificates, and compare safety reports and category markings with the approved sample.

Arrival condition: inspect battery compartments, displays, cases and lead insulation; check English instructions and demonstrate stored-reading export. Agree these checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A buyer can receive a tester whose advertised method does not suit the intended installation. Ask for a demonstration using the proposed connection arrangement before approving the sample. Do not accept a clamp function as a substitute for stake-based testing without confirming the supplier's stated operating conditions.

Loose terminals, damaged lead insulation, incomplete stake kits and calibration paperwork for a different model can undermine acceptance. Recording models can also export unusable files. Put the agreed method, accessories, accuracy checks and export demonstration into the purchase specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on earth resistance testers from China?

The relevant heading 9030 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff facts, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties. Confirm the code for the exact model.

Which commodity code covers an earth resistance tester?

9030 33 20 90 is a candidate for a dedicated resistance instrument without recording. Recording capability and multifunction operation can change the classification.

Should I buy a clamp or stake-based earth tester?

Choose against the intended installation and connection method. Ask for the operating limitations and a demonstration; compare the complete supplied kit rather than the instrument alone.

What calibration paperwork should I ask for?

Ask for a certificate matched to each instrument's serial number and agreed ranges. For professional use, request traceability to national standards and check sampled readings against a calibrated reference.
