Whole chipotle: 0%; ground chilli: 4% before suspension

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 0904 covers pepper and dried, crushed or ground Capsicum or Pimenta fruit. Whole dried chipotle chillies fall within the Capsicum line 0904 21 90 20 at 0%. Flakes and powder use the crushed or ground line 0904 22 00 19, with a 4% base duty and a 0% autonomous suspension. The suspension excludes mixtures, preparations and products containing different components.

The supplied tariff facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing measures on these lines and attach an organic-products import control. Confirm inspection-certificate requirements for release as organic with your customs broker. For imports from China into Great Britain, the certificate is issued by the exporter's control body in the country of export. Agree the organic paperwork before shipment.

The table repeats the relevant tariff lines for different buying formats. Confirm the species, physical form and any added ingredients using finding your commodity code. Sauces and seasoning blends are classified elsewhere. For the wider dried-chilli context, see dried jalapeño chillies.

Specify the chilli and smoking process

Specify jalapeño identity, growing origin, processing location and whether the order is whole pods, flakes or powder. Record the smoking method and any added flavouring or other ingredient. Approve a sample for smoke aroma, heat, colour and texture, then keep a sealed reference sample. Do not accept a generic smoked-chilli description as the complete specification.

Agree stem removal, seed content, broken pods, flake size or powder fineness, moisture and foreign-matter acceptance criteria. Specify sealed inner bags that protect against moisture and odour transfer. Ask for batch-linked tests for aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, pesticide residues, illegal dyes and Salmonella. Confirm applicable food contaminant and pesticide limits with the relevant food authority; agree testing through testing and certification.

Before booking, check the current high-risk food list for the product and Chinese origin. If listed, confirm pre-notification and border-check requirements with the relevant port-health authority. Ask the relevant food authority to confirm retail labelling requirements for the food name, ingredients where blended, net quantity and business address. Confirm the VAT treatment of culinary spices with HMRC or your customs broker; see UK import duty and VAT.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 5 tonnes of whole dried chipotle chillies; illustrative order under 0904 21 90 20, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,500, so it is £3,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare pods or processed chilli with the approved sample; check the declared chilli type, origin and added ingredients.

Smoke and quality: compare aroma, heat and colour; check for burnt material, excessive stems, uneven grinding and damp clumps.

Safety: match laboratory reports to the shipment batch and agreed testing panel; inspect for mould, insects, stones and other foreign matter.

Packing: check inner seals, moisture damage, batch identification and retail label details; retain sealed samples from the delivered lot.

What goes wrong

A smoked-chilli sample can conceal an unclear raw-material specification. Repeat lots may differ in chilli variety, smoke intensity, seed content or grinding. Damp storage encourages mould, while powder makes added material harder to spot. Compare production samples and arrival samples with the agreed reference, rather than judging the order by smoke aroma alone.

Unmatched test reports leave the delivered batch unverified. Added ingredients can also change classification and remove suspension eligibility. Resolve discrepancies before accepting the lot, and confirm whether any organic claim has the accompanying inspection certificate.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
