Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 0904 covers pepper and dried, crushed or ground Capsicum and Pimenta fruit. Whole dried jalapenos fall under 0904 21 90 20 at 0% duty from China. Crushed or ground jalapenos fall under 0904 22 00 19 at 4%, with an autonomous suspension to 0%. The suspension excludes mixtures and preparations. Neither relevant line lists an anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

The tariff attaches an import control of organic products to both lines. For organic jalapenos from China entering Great Britain, each consignment needs an organic certificate of inspection. Ask your approved UK organic control body to confirm the exporter’s eligibility and your import arrangements before ordering.

The table separates buying formats that share tariff codes. Confirm the variety, processing and ingredients through finding your commodity code. Sauces and blended seasonings are classified elsewhere. See the pepper and dried chillies guide for the wider heading.

Specify jalapeno variety, heat and drying

Name the jalapeno variety in the purchase specification and approve a sample before ordering. State green or red colour, smoked or unsmoked flavour, whole pods or crushed material, stalk removal, seed content and flake size or powder fineness. Agree moisture and pungency specifications with the supplier rather than accepting a description such as ‘medium hot’.

Agree batch testing for aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, pesticide residues, illegal dyes and Salmonella. Confirm applicable food contaminant and pesticide residue limits with the relevant food authority. Have that authority or a qualified label reviewer confirm the required retail-pack information, including the product name, net quantity, UK business address and ingredients where blended. Agree the label artwork and sealed reference samples alongside testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 tonnes of whole dried jalapeno chillies under 0904 21 90 20, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,500, so it is £3,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity and heat: compare the delivered jalapenos with the approved sample, supplier variety records and agreed pungency results; check colour and smoked or unsmoked flavour.

Condition: check moisture results, musty odour, visible mould, insect damage, stones, stalk fragments and damaged pods. For flakes and powder, check particle size and caking.

Batch evidence: match laboratory reports to the shipment’s batch marks and confirm that the agreed contaminant, residue, dye and microbiological tests cover the delivered goods.

Packaging and labels: inspect liners and seals for damage or dampness, compare labels with approved artwork and retain a sealed sample. Use a written quality inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A supplier may offer generic chilli material against a jalapeno enquiry. Similar colour does not establish variety or flavour, especially after grinding. Record the variety, seed content and processing route, then compare each delivery with the approved sample and batch results.

Damp storage can produce mould and mycotoxin problems, while powder can hide excess stalks or other material. Heat, colour and smoke flavour can also vary between batches. Separate suspect stock while you investigate; visual inspection alone cannot establish contaminant or pesticide compliance.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
