Dog muzzles: 2% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, heading 4201 covers saddlery and harness for animals, of any material, and expressly includes muzzles. Dog muzzles fall within 4201 00 00 90. The table shows product variants sharing that commodity line, rather than separate tariff classifications. See the wider pet products guide. For related walking accessories, see our guide to sourcing retractable dog leads. For dog toys in your range, see our guide to sourcing rubber dog chew toys.

The supplied tariff data lists 2% duty for goods from China, no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. It attaches cat and dog fur import and export controls, plus a seal products import control. Imports and exports of cat or dog fur products are banned. Seal products are restricted to limited permitted cases; confirm any proposed seal-derived component and its documentation with your customs broker before ordering.

Confirm the complete product description and materials using our commodity code guide. Ask the supplier to identify any animal-derived lining or trim rather than accepting an unspecified leather description.

Specify snout fit and intended use

Choose basket, leather or textile construction by intended use. Specify internal snout length, circumference, basket depth, strap adjustment and fastening position. Ask for a measurement diagram and assess samples across the intended size range. For a walking basket muzzle, check room to open the mouth for panting and access to drinking water; do not treat a close-fitting textile design as an interchangeable substitute.

Fix the basket material, wire finish where applicable, padding, webbing and buckle construction in the purchase specification. Agree fitting, supervision and cleaning instructions with a competent product adviser. Consumer products sold in Great Britain must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 800 dog muzzles, illustrative order only under 4201 00 00 90, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,700. Duty at 2% is £194. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,894, so it is £1,978.80. Import taxes total £2,172.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £194 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: compare internal dimensions and strap adjustment with the approved sample and size chart, including clearance around the nose and eyes.

Retention: check buckle engagement, strap slippage, rivets and stitching under an agreed pull test; record the test method and acceptance criteria.

Contact surfaces: inspect moulding flash, wire ends, welds, coating damage and padding edges; reject sharp or abrasive contact points.

Packing and instructions: check size identification, fitting diagrams, intended-use wording and cleaning advice against the approved artwork. Use our inspection guide to plan checks before shipment and on arrival.

What goes wrong

A size name can hide a shallow basket or short snout cavity. Substituted buckles release too easily, smooth straps slip through adjusters, and poorly finished welds or moulding edges rub. Approve physical samples in the actual materials and retain them for comparison with bulk production.

Avoid unsupported promises that a muzzle prevents every bite or suits every dog. A basket that permits panting can still fit badly or detach. Investigate fit and retention complaints against the supplied size, batch and construction before placing a repeat order.
