Sourcing dog collars from China
Dog collars from China carry a flat 2% UK duty under heading 4201, with no listed trade remedies. Consumer products must be safe, and collars containing cat or dog fur cannot be imported. Specify fit, buckle retention and lead-ring strength before production. Cambridge China Bridge sources dog collars.

Dog collars: 2% duty across materials
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, heading 4201 covers saddlery and harness for animals, of any material. Ordinary dog collars fall under 4201 00 00 90. The table separates buying specifications sharing that commodity line; the hand-made leather riding-saddle line is not relevant to dog collars. For equestrian sourcing, see our horse bridle guide.
The supplied tariff record shows 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed. It attaches cat and dog fur import and export controls and a seal-product import control. Imports and exports of cat or dog fur products are banned. Seal products face a ban with limited exceptions; ask your customs broker to confirm eligibility and required documents before ordering any seal-derived material.
Confirm the material and construction against the commodity code guide. For related products within the wider heading, see dog harnesses.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

Specify collar fit and fastening strength
Write down the material, strap width and thickness, usable neck adjustment range, buckle type, lead-ring material and finish, stitching pattern, lining and branding. Define how neck size is measured with the collar fastened. For leather, name the animal species and agree the edge finish; for coated webbing, approve flexibility and coating adhesion.
Approve a production sample with the actual buckle and ring. Agree pull-test methods and acceptance criteria for the assembled collar, including adjuster slippage and ring attachment. Consumer products must be safe for normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Include fitting and care instructions, and distinguish walking collars from decorative designs. For lead sourcing, see our guide to retractable dog leads.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 800 own-brand dog collars; FOB value and freight are illustrative. under 4201 00 00 90, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,700. Duty at 2% is £194. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,894, so it is £1,978.80. Import taxes total £2,172.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £194 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: measure the usable adjustment range and strap dimensions against the approved specification; check that loose ends remain secured.
Fastenings: operate buckles repeatedly, check full engagement and test the assembled buckle, adjuster and lead-ring attachment against agreed criteria.
Materials: inspect stitching, leather edges and coating adhesion; check for sharp hardware, colour transfer and differences from the approved sample.
Arrival: check carton condition, dampness, mould, size assortment and label accuracy before releasing stock. Use the same checks at the factory through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
An attractive sample can hide a weak fastening. Buckles can release under tension, adjusters can creep and ring stitching can tear. A stated collar length can also be mistaken for the usable neck size. Put the assembled strength checks and measurement method in the purchase specification.
Material substitutions create different problems: softer webbing slips, coating splits at bends, leather edges rub and metal finishes corrode after wet use. Compare bulk samples with the approved collar, including after agreed wetting and drying checks, before accepting the shipment.
