Zero duty on the relevant printer lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8443 covers printing machinery, other printers, copying and facsimile machines, and their parts and accessories. This guide focuses on digital textile inkjet printers and their replacement parts.

All the supplied commodity lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or import controls. Zero duty does not remove product compliance obligations.

For an inkjet printer capable of connecting to a computer or network, check 8443 32 10 00 against the specification. Do not choose 8443 19 20 00 solely because the machine prints textiles: that line sits under machinery using plates, cylinders or other printing components. Confirm the commodity code for the machine and separately shipped parts. See screen printing machines for the wider heading.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Specify the fabric, ink and finishing process

State whether you need direct printing onto fabric or printing onto transfer paper. Specify the fabrics, usable print width, roll handling, fabric thickness, stretch and surface preparation. Name the print-head maker and model, ink chemistry, colour channels, controller and image-processing software. Agree software licences, supported file formats and access to colour profiles.

Define acceptable output using your artwork, fabric and intended production settings. Ask the factory to demonstrate solid colours, fine lines, gradients and repeat patterns during a continuous run. Agree who supplies pretreatment, drying, steaming, washing or transfer equipment where your chosen process needs it. Assess colour and wash performance after the agreed finishing process.

For machinery supplied into Great Britain, confirm with the relevant product-safety authority the applicable Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 requirements for conformity assessment, technical documentation, a declaration of conformity and CE or UKCA marking. Obtain English instructions for the exact configuration. Electrical equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance also falls within the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016, subject to exceptions. Arrange a testing and certification review against the supplied system.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative order for a digital textile inkjet printer under 8443 32 10 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £63,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £63,000, so it is £12,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Print heads and output: record head identities, run nozzle checks before and after sustained printing, and inspect for missing jets, banding, colour drift and blurred edges using the agreed fabric and ink.

Fabric transport: check alignment, tension, tracking and take-up through a continuous run. Look for skewed repeats, wrinkles, slipping and fabric contact with the print heads. Check any adhesive belt and cleaning system.

Safety and documents: match the nameplate, configuration and declaration; check English instructions and the agreed electrical supply. Have a competent person test guards, interlocks and emergency stops before production use.

Arrival and support: photograph crate damage, check carriage restraints, ink leaks and missing accessories, then repeat the agreed acceptance print after installation. Confirm software access and the supplied maintenance parts. Use the inspection guide to plan factory and arrival checks.

What goes wrong

A demonstration on the supplier's fabric can hide poor feeding on your material. Different ink, pretreatment or finishing can change colour and wash performance. Substituted heads, blocked nozzles, unstable fabric tension and unavailable colour profiles can leave the delivered printer unable to reproduce the approved sample.

Approve a sample made through your intended process and retain its artwork, settings and finished fabric. Agree component substitutions, maintenance responsibilities, spare-head supply, remote access and commissioning support in writing. Check that conformity paperwork describes the delivered configuration, including integrated drying or handling equipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on digital textile inkjet printers from China?

The relevant printer and parts lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record read on 1 October 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures.

Which commodity code covers a digital textile inkjet printer?

Check 8443 32 10 00 for a printer capable of connecting to a computer or network. Confirm the actual configuration; textile use alone does not establish the code.

Is a CE certificate enough for a textile printer?

Ask for the declaration of conformity matching the supplied machinery, English instructions and supporting technical evidence. Check the actual configuration and marking rather than relying on a generic certificate.

How should I test a textile inkjet printer before shipment?

Run your artwork on your intended fabric and ink through sustained printing and the agreed finishing process. Check nozzle condition, banding, fabric tracking, colour consistency and wash performance.
