Sourcing pad printing machines from China

Pad printing machines and the selected printing-machinery parts from China carry 0% UK duty, so the duty range is uniformly zero. Powered machinery must be safe before it is placed on the Great Britain market or put into service. Confirm the code and test with your actual articles. Duty on pad printing machines and parts

Heading 8443 covers printing machinery using plates, cylinders and other printing components, other printers, copying and facsimile machines, and their parts. For a general-purpose pad printing machine, 8443 19 70 00 is a candidate rather than a classification guarantee. A machine for printing textile materials may need the textile-specific line.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 21 October 2026, every line in the supplied heading data carried 0% duty on goods from China. The data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. The selected machine and parts lines therefore have the same duty rate.

Confirm the commodity code using the printing process, intended materials and whether the shipment contains a complete machine or separate parts. See the screen printing machines guide for the wider printing-machinery category.

Specify the pad, ink cup and workholding

Specify the article material and shape, artwork size, colours, registration tolerance and required production output. Agree whether the machine uses sealed ink cups or open trays, the plate format, pad shape and hardness, fixture design, loading method and drying arrangement. Send actual articles for a print trial.

Confirm the electrical supply and compressed-air needs, controller language, changeover procedure and included spares. Powered machinery must be safe before being placed on the Great Britain market or put into service. Ask for the model-specific conformity documents, English operating instructions and electrical schematic; arrange testing and certification review before shipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one pad printing machine with fixtures under 8443 19 70 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Print trial: run the machine with your articles, artwork and agreed ink system; check coverage, fine detail, colour registration and adhesion after the agreed curing process.

Ink transfer: check cup sealing, plate wiping, pad alignment and repeatability during continuous running, including after a pause and restart.

Safety and documents: have a competent person check guards, interlocks, emergency stopping and unexpected restart behaviour; match the machine identity to its documents.

Arrival condition: check pads, plates, fixtures, ink cups, spare seals and transit restraints against the packing list; repeat the approved print trial after installation. Plan these checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A trial on the supplier's flat test piece can hide problems on curved or textured articles. Poor pad selection, moving fixtures, uneven wiping and an unsuitable ink system can cause missing detail, smearing or weak adhesion. Agree acceptance against your actual articles and retain the approved printed samples.

Cup seals, pads and fixtures may differ from the approved configuration, while packing can disturb alignment. Record component identities and setup settings, agree replacement consumables and commissioning support, and inspect the machine that will ship.
