Sourcing digital duplicators from China

The relevant digital duplicator and parts lines carry 0% UK duty for goods from China. Confirm classification from the printing mechanism, rather than the word copier. Importers of equipment covered by electrical safety rules must ensure it has easily understandable English instructions. Cambridge China Bridge sources digital duplicators.

Zero duty on the relevant duplicator lines

Heading 8443 covers printing machinery, printers, copying and facsimile machines, and their parts. This guide concerns digital duplicators that make a stencil master and print through it. The table gives classification candidates for machines and replacement parts, rather than interchangeable codes. See the wider printers and printing equipment guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 19 October 2026, all lines in the supplied heading data carry 0% duty for goods from China. The recorded duty range is therefore uniformly 0%. The supplied facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Confirm the commodity code using the printing process, master-making mechanism, connectivity and supplied assembly. Send your customs broker the manual, photographs and parts list. Identify whether replacement parts belong to stencil-printing machinery or to other printers or copiers before selecting a parts line.

Specify the master system, drums and paper path

Specify paper sizes and weights, printable area, master-roll dimensions, ink cartridge interface, drum colours and interchangeability. Record whether the machine scans originals, accepts computer files or includes network connectivity. Agree the supplied controller, drivers, language settings, consumables and replacement feed rollers. Test the actual machine with your artwork and paper.

For equipment within electrical safety rules, the importer must ensure easily understandable English instructions accompany it. Ask for the exact model's declaration of conformity and supporting safety documents. Assess electromagnetic compatibility against the actual configuration: the rules cover equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. Obtain hazardous-substance technical documentation, and confirm whether your business has producer obligations for waste electrical equipment; producers must register annually.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of a compact stencil-printing digital duplicator, subject to classification under 8443 19 70 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,000, so it is £800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Master making: create a fresh master from your artwork; check fine text, solid areas, image position and consistent ink coverage throughout the agreed print run.

Paper feeding: use your stock to check separation, skew, double feeds, jams, delivery stacking and ink transfer onto adjacent sheets.

Drums and consumables: fit the agreed ink cartridges and master rolls; check drum changes, locking, leakage and removal of spent masters.

Arrival and documents: inspect the drum, scanner glass, feed rollers and casing for damage; match the machine identity, accessories and English instructions to the order. Arrange quality inspection before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A similar-looking cartridge or master roll may have a different fitting or recognition system. A demonstration with factory consumables can conceal this mismatch. Record the exact consumable references and test replacements before shipment. Worn feed rollers, damaged drums or poor master making can cause skew, streaks, uneven solids and repeated jams.

A scanner demonstration does not establish that the supplied controller and drivers accept your files. Test the agreed connection and operating environment. On refurbished machines, check the actual delivered unit and maintenance records. Agree who supplies replacement drums, rollers and controller support, and retain the approved print samples.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on digital duplicators from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty across heading 8443, including the relevant duplicator and parts lines, with no recorded trade remedies. Confirm the exact commodity code. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Which commodity code applies to a digital duplicator?

For a stencil-printing model, assess 8443 19 70 00 with your broker. The name digital duplicator alone does not settle classification. Supply details of the printing mechanism and master-making process.

Can I use locally available ink and master rolls?

Check the exact cartridge interface, master dimensions and any recognition system. Test your intended consumables in the actual machine before shipment, and record the approved references in the order.

What should a factory print trial check?

Use your artwork, paper and intended consumables. Check master making, fine text, solid coverage, image position, feeding, stacking and smearing. Test file input as well as scanning.
