Sourcing construction diesel engines from China

Construction machinery diesel engines from China normally pay 4% UK duty, with 0% only for specified suspended uses. Engines for new non-road mobile machinery sold in Great Britain need emission type approval and approval markings. Match the approval and mounting details to the machine. Cambridge China Bridge sources construction machinery diesel engines.

Standard duty and restricted suspensions

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the selected construction machinery engine lines under heading 8408 carry a standard duty of 4% for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls on these lines. Heading 8408 covers compression-ignition piston engines; classify the engine being imported separately from the complete excavator or loader.

Some selected lines have a 0% suspension for specified manufacturing uses. Under 8408 90 41 90 this concerns engines for vehicle-mounted temperature control systems. Under 8408 90 45 90 and 8408 90 47 90 it concerns specified engines for manufacturing vehicles of heading 8427. The suspension under 8408 90 43 90 requires authorised-use customs supervision. These are conditional provisions, not a general exemption for construction engines; ask your broker to check the full engine specification and intended use.

Confirm the commodity code using the machine application, rated power and whether the engine is new or used. Crushing and screening machinery engines have additional specifically described lines, so a power band alone may not settle classification. For the related vehicle branch of this heading, see agricultural tractor diesel engines.

Specify the engine and its machine interfaces

Identify the excavator, loader, roller or crusher model and the existing engine identification. Specify rated power and speed, the torque curve for hydraulic pump operation, mounting positions, flywheel housing, pump coupling, cooling package, sump clearance, exhaust routing and electrical connections. State whether the supply includes the controller, wiring loom, sensors and exhaust after-treatment.

Confirm with the relevant authority whether new non-road mobile machinery sold in Great Britain needs a type-approved engine with approval markings. Type approval demonstrates compliance with the latest emissions standards. Ask for the emission approval certificate for the exact engine family and confirmation of the applicable Great Britain approval route before ordering. Where the engine is supplied as partly completed machinery, obtain assembly instructions and a declaration of incorporation. Arrange testing and certification support if the documentation needs checking.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: One new replacement diesel engine for an excavator, exceeding 100 kW but not exceeding 200 kW; illustrative order under 8408 90 61 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 4% is £368. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,568, so it is £1,913.60. Import taxes total £2,281.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £368 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the engine model, serial identification and approval marking to the agreed documents and packing list; photograph the plates before shipment and on arrival.

Fitment: compare mounts, flywheel housing, pump coupling, sump profile and hose connections against approved drawings; check that the after-treatment package fits the available space.

Operation: witness a load test recording power and torque at the agreed speed, coolant temperature and oil pressure; check starting, controller faults and leaks after running.

Delivery: check capped ports, corrosion protection, transit damage, loose connectors, manuals and agreed spares on arrival. Use the quality inspection guide to plan checks before dispatch as well as receipt.

What goes wrong

A similar engine model can have different mounts, pump interfaces, controller settings or exhaust equipment. A power figure without its operating speed can conceal insufficient torque for the machine's hydraulic demand. Make drawings, the torque curve and the agreed component list part of the order.

Approval documents may cover a different engine family from the delivered unit. Other failures include leaking gaskets, incompatible sensors and damaged connectors. Resolve document mismatches and failed bench tests before dispatch, and agree how the supplier will diagnose faults and supply replacement parts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on construction diesel engines from China?

The selected construction engine lines carry a standard duty of 4%. Some have a conditional 0% suspension for specified manufacturing uses. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on these lines.

Do diesel engines for new excavators need emission approval?

Ask for the certificate for the exact engine family and confirm the applicable approval route before ordering.

Will an engine with the same power fit my loader?

Power alone does not establish compatibility. Compare mounts, flywheel housing, pump coupling, torque at operating speed, cooling, exhaust equipment and controller connections against the machine's requirements.

What documents should come with an engine for incorporation?

Where it is supplied as partly completed machinery, obtain assembly instructions and a declaration of incorporation. Also request the engine identification, emission approval documents, wiring information and service manual.
