Sourcing confocal microscopes from China

Confocal optical microscopes from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant heading 9011 lines, with no listed trade remedies. For mains-powered models, confirm the applicable electrical conformity requirements with Trading Standards before sale in Great Britain. Specify optical sectioning and channel alignment tests before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources confocal optical microscopes.

UK duty on confocal optical microscopes

Heading 9011 covers compound optical microscopes, including instruments for photomicrography, and their parts and accessories. For a confocal system, distinguish photomicrographic equipment from other microscopes using the supplied configuration. The semiconductor line applies specifically to photomicrographic microscopes fitted with equipment designed to handle and transport wafers or reticles.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duties or suspensions were listed. The tariff attaches an entry labelled DCMS Export Licence. Official guidance says there are no licensing requirements for importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain; ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached entry applies to your shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the optical design, imaging function and equipment supplied. Describe separately imported accessories accurately rather than assigning every component the complete instrument's code. For the wider microscope family, see our fluorescence optical microscopes guide.

Specify the confocal imaging system

State whether you need point-scanning or spinning-disc confocal imaging, an upright or inverted stand, and fluorescence or reflected-light operation. Specify excitation wavelengths, emission filters, detector type, objective numerical aperture and immersion medium, pinhole adjustment, scan field and focus control. Match these to your specimens and imaging task.

Agree acceptance tests for optical sectioning, channel registration, background signal and focus repeatability using reference specimens. Include the computer, acquisition software licence, image export formats, installation, alignment procedure and replacement parts in the purchase specification. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the exact configuration rather than a different demonstration instrument.

For mains-powered models, confirm with Trading Standards the applicable electrical safety conformity, CE or UKCA marking, declaration of conformity and UK importer identification requirements for the Great Britain market. Also confirm whether electromagnetic compatibility, restricted substances and waste electrical equipment obligations apply. In-scope electrical equipment must have easily understandable English instructions. Whether laser protective eyewear is needed depends on the employer's risk assessment. Arrange testing and certification around the supplied system.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A laboratory confocal photomicrographic microscope, illustrative order under 9011 20 90 00, invoiced at £27,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £28,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £28,500, so it is £5,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Sectioning: image the agreed reference specimen through a focus series and compare section separation, background and image detail with the approved results.

Channels: check excitation and filter selection, detector response, channel alignment and signal leaking into neighbouring channels using the agreed reference specimens.

Mechanics and software: check focus return, stage drift, scan artefacts, acquisition controls, software activation and reopening exported image files.

Safety and transit: have a competent person check enclosure and interlock operation without exposing the inspector to the beam. Match markings, declarations and instructions to the supplied model; inspect optical mounts and packing for movement.

What goes wrong

A supplier may demonstrate fluorescence images without proving confocal sectioning. Other failures include mismatched filters, channel misregistration, unstable focus and scan artefacts. A software licence tied to the supplier's computer can prevent acquisition after delivery. Put the reference images, test settings and software access arrangements in the acceptance record.

Transport can shift scanner or optical alignment even when the crate looks intact. Compare arrival tests with the factory results before accepting the system, and agree who performs realignment. Check inspection scope through our quality inspection guide.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on confocal microscopes from China?

The relevant heading 9011 lines carried 0% duty for goods from China on 1 October 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code covers a confocal microscope?

Check the supplied configuration. The table distinguishes photomicrographic microscopes, other microscopes, parts and specialised wafer-handling equipment. Confocal imaging alone does not determine the code.

Do confocal microscopes need CE or UKCA marking?

For mains-powered models, confirm the applicable electrical conformity evidence, CE or UKCA marking and declaration of conformity requirements for Great Britain with Trading Standards. Check the documents against the complete supplied configuration.

How do I check that a microscope is genuinely confocal?

Ask for an optical sectioning test using an agreed reference specimen. Compare a focus series, background signal and channel alignment with approved results rather than accepting a single fluorescence image.
